In Singapore, for example, taxi service Comfort Del Gro operates busses. And they operate them in Australia, Ireland, China, Malaysia and so on. Just an extension of expertise and capital.

Here in Asia, private minibus services exist in many communities & extent public transportation services that are unfunded. As always, an issue is regulation. Will Uber's services be regulated? For safety & pricing & access? Probably not because Uber's lobbyists will fight that. They are bad actors.

To be honest, although they are pretending to reinvent the bus, this brand extension makes sense for Uber (they're already in the transit business) and the article notes but does not make the link between theoretical public transport accountability and funding shortfalls faced by so many systems.
