I’ve seen a female Northern Shoveler this fall but no males, I had a friend tell they were quite striking and now that I’ve seen one, I would have to agree. #northernshoveler #ducks #birds #nature #naturephotography #cowichanvalley #westcoast #britishcolumbia #canada #photography #cowichanbay

Three black-necked grebes (geoorde fuut) were passing through at the Weurt Grote Grindgat today. Some of them nest in other parts of the Netherlands (along the dunes or in Groningen, for instance) but not here, so we only see them in winter. One was clearly getting ready for spring. #birds

#ArtDD2025 Tree sparrows From my archive. Tree sparrows used to be common. Now they're rare. What are we doing to our world? @saocousins.bsky.social @holnicotenh.bsky.social @stevecobbin.bsky.social @andykaitken.bsky.social @mayfieldbirder.bsky.social @indikon.bsky.social

For finding people that are also interested in you, follow the Mutuals feed. The 'Following' feed is great, if you follow a hundred people. It's impossible to stay up to date with anything. You'll miss the interesting bits by interesting folks. bsky.app/profile/did:...

Follow the quiet posters feed to solve mass shitposter overwhelm bsky.app/profile/did:...

For the fact that I'm following quite a number of people, and have a reasonable number of followers, engagement here is decreasing lately. What is it? Are people overwhelmed by mass posters in the following feed? Where is everyone?

This... I think many people are totally unaware of the cuts in funding (that are not just happening in the US currently)... These cuts don't just mean less funding for science, but also fewer jobs. Even fewer jobs.

Interesting visualizations in this piece! Most people don't think further away than five years (if that!), but in terms of immigration, it might be quite wise to do so!

I couldn't agree more, and I am currently writing a grant proposal to hopefully do just that...

I'm quite happy that we're already handling the first submissions for our special issue in Biological Conservation devoted to ALAN impacts at larger scales, and conservation impacts. If you know anyone working on ALAN that might be interested in contributing, please share widely!

Thanks, @jeffollerton.bsky.social for writing such a lovely book. I enjoyed every chapter of it. I love how it reads like a combination of a literature review and your own blog, in the best possible way. A great journey into biodiversity, through the lens of bird pollination that I highly recommend!

On #InternationalDayofWomenandGirlsinScience let me remind you that we are NOWHERE NEAR parity. A few examples. 1. Women are credited less in science than men. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The adorable newborn tapir calf is already mastering the art of wiggling its tiny trunk. 🥰 Baby tapirs use their tiny trunks for sniffing, exploring, and even grasping small objects. Their trunks are an extended upper lip and nose, which helps them sense their surroundings and forage as they grow.

Spring is kicking in early in our chicken flock. Our Javanese bantams only laid a few eggs last year, but this week alone they laid more eggs than last season combined. The Wyandotte managed one thus far (beige one) but they laid hundreds last summer. Chickens are lovely outdoor friends.

The best way to go with all that's wrong in this world is to ridicule. This is the best I've seen. youtu.be/b9hxwgH2tN0?...

Last official element of my winter semester. To test their bird and mammal identification skills, I prepared a little trial exam for students in our zoological collection. It always amazes me how difficult people find bird identification, even with perfect pictures or good taxidermy specimens.

Teaching and work life really take their toll on my energy levels in this time of the year. And then I forget my blog! I shouldn't do that! (A note to self more than anything else) robinheinen.com/2025/02/04/f...

It's quite nice to see that our department is studying birds quite a lot lately!

Soon, the #Ecolopes project will come to a close. As part of this project, bringing together city planning, architecture, and of course ecology, we have organized a (hybrid) conference on the 24.02.25. Please share with interested people. Registration: b78d3.r.a.d.sendibm1.com/mk/cl/f/sh/6...

Well, that was charming ❤️. Do yourself a favour and take 15 minutes out of your day to watch this documentary. Inspiring! #birds 🌿 #biodiversity #conservation youtu.be/z7xwv3twYDI?...
