Wow - this looks amazing

Reminder for my mutuals: misgendering is violence and never okay. No, not even if it is done to "people who deserve it". If your willingness to use the correct pronouns or name for someone depends on if you like them then you're not a safe person to be around. Same if you tolerate when others do it.

One, what do you think this work is doing/achieving, and who does it benefit; two, "may be" is two words

here trane yr drummer’s shite pal

wheeeee

I've been eyeing up this monster at my local record shop for about 18 months. Today I gave in. Probably my fav opera. The record shop is literally a couple of streets away from where part of the opera is set. The opera texts are by a 13-year old #autistic kid. No-brainer, really. #minimalism #ASD

The sad thing is that email and admin have taken over academic life so much that many of us have to squeeze in the poisoning of minds on evenings and weekends.

"Anti-migrant politics will not build a single house, staff a single hospital or raise anyone’s wages. Instead, by echoing its rhetoric, the government is simply fuelling the rise of Reform UK" Well done to these Labour MPs, trade unionists, and members. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

If you don't know Neill's work, then 1) where have you been, 2) I am jealous that you now get to read Mega Robo Bros in its entirety. This has been just the best thing to share with my kid (now 12??) over the years, and we agree that the conclusion is epic!

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.

Happy Valentine's Day, especially to anyone who might identify with one of the letters in LGBTQ, particularly the day after someone Trumpy stripped the letter T and then the letter Q from the National Park Service website for Stonewall in New York City.

So I've been reading "The Rise And Fall Of The Third Reich" by William Shirer and every time I audibly say "uh oh" I screenshot the page.

Yet more performative cruelty. This means someone who fled for their life 25 yrs ago, got refugee status in the UK, and has been part of their community here ever since - maybe married, had kids, started a business - can never be a citizen. That’s not right. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

very important that we must never ever ask why people have made a dangerous journey (spoiler: it's because we have removed all safe legal routes to asylum!)

Really looking forward to this conversation with @sulinlewis.bsky.social, @jamesamark.bsky.social, @tanyaharmer.bsky.social, @riakapoor.bsky.social & Leslie James about this excellent book. If anyone wants to join online, please let me know. @bbkhistorical.bsky.social

I have a meeting in this building this morning!

Discworld QOTD, from Going Postal

You'd think a KC would value international law more than appeasing racists, but:

blindsided once again by the local community org newsletter (volunteer written), full of spelling mistakes, punctuation barely existent, but communicates with such a strong, clear and engaging voice. it has been created purely to challenge all my most deeply-held beliefs about language

Pro tip for prospective Labour MPs (and indeed selection committees): do not engage in Whatsapp groups that once leaked will make all your constituents think you're a knobhead

Trump has now asked Elon Musk to examine US defence spending. Elon Musk’s companies have multi billion dollar contracts with the Department of Defense and are seeking more. The BBC’s Today Programme just reported the first part, without mentioning the second. Unacceptable

“It became clear that no one was willing to address the fundamental question: how could continued arms sales to Israel possibly be legal? The Foreign Office’s handling of these issues is nothing short of a scandal. Officials are bullied into silence.” www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

observer editor: so what are you writing about this week? sonia sodha: i’m going to write about how it’s all the trans’s fault! observer editor: sorry, what’s the trans’s fault? sonia sodha: [already typing] i’ll work that out as I go!

Working my way through this now and, unsurprisingly, it's excellent. Everyone should take this course. And most importantly, share it with your students!

horrifying

Listening to today programme discussion about huge amounts of water that AI datacentres are going to need. AI is surely coming for lots of people's jobs, and I guess will concentrate wealth in hands of tech owners. Yet it's billed as necessary and inevitable. Why?

so often when I ask "where is this utter shite being published?", the answer is "the critic"

Once again for those at the back: objections to irregular/“illegal” migration are pretty much always a proxy for objections to all migration, and here come the Tories once again proving the point

absolute rogue state behaviour

Tremendous workshop today on class barriers to HE with the brilliant folk of @divideclass.bsky.social, imagining a university that was actually welcoming to working class people!

hope his wife enjoys 'escaping the confines' of marriage to him v soon

paging BBC news editors

really cannot stand responses to trump that are so flip about the fact that biden presided over the administration that gladly provided the bombs and political cover to kill hundreds of thousands of people. no getting around that

On my way to London and uttering my regular curse on whoever commissioned the Thameslink rolling stock without tables or power sockets

The President of the United States welcome a leader wanted by the ICC and officially endorsed ethnic cleansing. Now would be a good time for our government to defend international law. If they won’t say it, we will: Palestinians aren’t going anywhere.
