Tall doctors against fascism

🚨Report your NSF grant terminations! 🚨 We are starting to collect information on NSF grant terminations to create a shared resource as we have for NIH. The more information we collect, the more we can organize, advocate, and fight back! Please share widely! airtable.com/appGKlSVeXni...

This apparently has to do with the fact that Grants Management Specialists now have to justify every payment (not just every grant, but every reimbursement) and the process for managing this is not yet set up (or at least that it my current understanding)...

Never seen it framed this way by all recent elections Wild

Per source, NIH has been instructed to hold off from issuing ALL awards to Harvard, Cornell, Columbia, Brown, and Northwestern (including med schools) Agency staff have also been instructed to not speak about this funding freeze to grantees and applicants

MSF: TB patients with fluoroquinolone-resistant MDR-TB developed high rates of resistance to a last resort medication -bedaquiline (BDQ) - during treatment: 48% by phenotypic testing, 52% by mutation tests, despite low initial resistance levels. journals.asm.org/doi/full/10....

I took this course in its first incarnation, and it was an amazing experience to learn from leaders in the field of antibiotic resistance & opportunity to meet fellow learners (in an amazing setting). Honored to return this year as a speaker for the first time. Come join us!

Calling all statisticians: we need your help. We'll soon be running an RCT comparing ceftazidime + iv fosfomycin to ceftaz alone in septic patients. Our hospital's stats unit is small & overworked. If you're available to freelance, we have a budget for this! #IDSky #Clinmicro #EpiSky #MedSky (1/2)

As a recipient of federal grants from #NIH (for now! 😭) that funds research in my lab, I'd like to sincerely thank American taxpayers on #TaxDay for investing in scientific research that lays the foundation for medical and technological innovation in this country and keeps us all safe and healthy

Terrific news in Sweden... Massive decreases in HPV-16 & 18 due to HPV vaccination. There was a 98%/99% decline in HPV-16/HPV-18 prevalence among 2000-born vs. (unvaxxed) 1984-born cohort. Declines larger than the vax coverage, suggesting herd immunity operating. 🛟🧪😷 Medsky idsky health policy

@steventong.bsky.social presents the results of the PSSA domain of the SNAP 🫰 trial - the worlds largest trial of staph aureus bacteremia - at #ESCMID2025 fluclox resulted in higher mortality and more AKI compared to penicillin for PSSA

Might as well: If you're one of the hundreds of scientists working on this secret initiative, would love to speak with you. (Or if you know anything about.)

The 👏 point 👏 of 👏 vaccination 👏 is 👏 that 👏 we 👏 don’t 👏 have 👏 to 👏 urgently 👏 treat 👏 severely 👏 ill 👏 children

needless to say, this is not how evidence based medicine works

Maybe it's just me but I feel very sad that the United States has a #measles tracker in 2025, when we have had a vaccine that is 97% effective for over 50 years. www.nbcnews.com/data-graphic...

Published an op-ed for @cnn.com: “Nobel laureate: I owe America my success. Today, its scientific future is in danger.” A personal reflection on what’s at stake as science funding gets slashed. I’d be grateful if you could amplify both in and beyond the science world. www.cnn.com/2025/04/09/h...

Biggest commitment to a 3 second joke I've ever seen

This plot will never cease to amaze me

Vaccines save lives by the millions, this is not a point of debate.

The stock market is something we watch and feel and measure, so its collapse is well-tracked. But when you see the charts of a straight downward trajectory, they also summarize what’s happening with cancer research, academic freedom, basic rights, America’s standing in the world, and so much more.

Suffice to say - if you are a local philanthropist and would like to see infectious disease surveillance continue here in San Diego County, please reach out. Without continued support, we'll lose our eyes on infectious diseases in our county, just as they're likely to surge. Email on website 👇.

Sadly relevant again, for what won't be the last time.

This is probably obvious to all who follow me here, but when a very contagious infection leads to rare terrible outcomes (measles, COVID), it can both be devastating at a population level, & also most patients will recover without therapy, which makes any therapy look like it works, anecdotally.

The thing about misinformation and the distortion of public health is that it desensitizes the public to the abnormal. It is completely abnormal for a measles outbreak to continue unchecked in a wealthy country with abundant vaccine access. www.reuters.com/business/hea...

Antigen identified that may finally allow us to determine the cause of Kawasaki’s Disease in Children. Truly amazing. Stan Shulman and that team at Northwestern and Japan have been looking for this for decades. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40122524/

What’s happening to the stock market is what’s happened already to public health in the US. You just can’t see it… yet

My favorite example of this is "The Los Angeles Angels" = "The The Angels Angels" (...formerly "The The Angels Angels of Anaheim", which was somehow even funnier)
