AND because he's being goaded into it by a group, which is a big factor

Just read this and agree with every word. It reminds me of when we were teenagers, there would always be the guy who would drink piss or eat a worm at a party. Technically he was doing it of his own free will but not because he likes piss or worms, because he likes being "that guy"

It's pure attention seeking behaviour, it's really pathetic

Came early to the gym to avoid them today and there's more of them! And they're clogging up all the arm weights because they can't be bothered to do cardio
comment in response to post
Yes! All of those things. There was a guy on a weight machine dropping the weights so they crash each time and acting like a big man. Dude, you're clearly lifting weights too heavy for you if you're not able to lower them with any control
comment in response to post
I know, it serves them right. Not true in every case at all but women who date significantly older are often compromising on physical attractiveness in exchange for money. I don't know why they can't see that
comment in response to post
Totally!
comment in response to post
Exactly. And if I didn't pay my fair share (which of course I did) they'd be well within their rights to end the date and go home
comment in response to post
Absolutely mad

And the less said the better about the filthy old 49-year-old man who tried to match with the 19-year-old and was upset that she wanted him to sign up to her onlyfans
comment in response to post
I've dated a couple of very wealthy men and the first date was always a pint at the local pub
comment in response to post
Don't get me wrong, there are some absolutely vile, manipulative women out there but honestly you're setting yourself up to get burnt if your type is "young and hot" and what you have to offer is money
comment in response to post
A first date can just be a nice walk round a park! You don't need to get stuck with a big dinner bill that a woman won't split with you
comment in response to post
That's very kind, thank you
comment in response to post
ha! People keep saying I should write my own screenplay. I have enough for a whole book tbf
comment in response to post
Thanks mate, sorry I didn't reply before. Such a hectic day
comment in response to post
If I have some time at some point I'll post some more pictures and stories from the Tan Hill Inn. Just nobody ask me about the drive out. I would prefer not to revisit that experience

Here's the final instalment. Thanks so much to everyone for your kind words and following along. It has been one of the most intense reporting experiences for quite some time (the only moments alone were in the bathroom!) but it was also one of the most memorable www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

We're hoping to get out today and we're getting everything ready in case the snow plough can get through. I'm not confident we'll make it out, in all honesty. Even if the snow plough comes, the roads are very steep and won't have been gritted

I showed everyone during what is our (hopefully) farewell party in the barn

On the other hand, this has been popular!

There is some disgruntlement among the residents over this headline! They have asked me to make clear, we arrived before the weather warning began and have not moved since! These guys have not attempted to travel, which is precisely why everyone is still here! No ignoring has happened!
comment in response to post
Yes! They had to be dug out this morning!
comment in response to post
Just me. But there are five trained hairdressers among the group
comment in response to post
No I didn't! Next time
comment in response to post
Yeah it's quite a big pub, quite a few camper vans and enough beds for everyone! There's space for loudness and for quiet time
comment in response to post
I don't think it works anymore!
comment in response to post
Nope, they're very generous. But most people have booked and paid for at least one night
comment in response to post
I have no idea, I'll ask around
comment in response to post
I'm writing, emailing, speaking to people and doing my normal job. Plus occasionally going to dig someone out of the snow
comment in response to post
So far, neither of them have occurred but there's still time
comment in response to post
No I've only done it this once because of the severe weather warning! But it worked out

And some of @garycalton.bsky.social's wonderful photos here www.theguardian.com/uk-news/gall...

It turns out it's quite hard to maintain a bluesky thread while also writing and posting on Instagram. But here is a v brief rundown of events www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

"Are you guys still working?" someone has just asked. We are nearly done for the day. We've been handed whiskies by an Australian

I'm going to take a break from this thread because I need to actually write and file some stories from here!

The main problem for getting out and for the roads is the depth of the snow drifts. I got about thigh-height into one but I really didn't want to go any further, despite having thermals, waterproof trousers and snow cleats
comment in response to post
I've just put all my winter gear on and been outside! It's absolutely arctic out there. If you look carefully, you can see what a great sense of humour people still have about the situation
comment in response to post
While we're on the subject, the staff have been EXCEPTIONAL. I cannot stress enough how hospitable they've been. They've been working insanely long hours, making sure we're all ok. One of the bar staff, Kelly, is missing her daughter's 18th birthday
comment in response to post
This is Nicole with Agatha the dog last night. It's Agatha's birthday today so she had a little bowl of chopped sausages for breakfast. She's just finished a round of steroids after a brush with death where she had to have two blood transfusions for a medical condition. That's why she's a chonk
comment in response to post
One of the main questions people have had is whether there's enough food and supplies. The answer is yes! Nicole, one of the staff, told me there's a month's supply of food. We also have lots of firewood and the pub has its own generator. We're hoping to be able to get out tomorrow at the latest

The snow really began about 11pm on Saturday night. Fine flakes but many of them and falling very consistently. The bar was open until about midnight and then people retreated to their beds. Some are in camper vans, some in rooms here. There was just enough space that meant nobody slept on the floor
comment in response to post
Ever the professional, @garycalton.bsky.social has been out at all times of day of night, climbing on things in the snow for many hours. I, on the other hand, have mostly been indoors watching him out of the window

Spirits were high, there was a lots of alcohol flowing. Some women from Durham were passing around shots. There were board games, card games, and a four-year-old boy performed a dance routine (that I believe had been done a few times before) to Miley Cyrus's Wrecking Ball
