I reprocessed the core of NGC2264, the Cone (Christmas tree) nebula which I shot last month. 🔭 #astrophotography

Another dataset I like is from the National Atmospheric Deposition Program, which has maps of the US that show we fixed the acid rain problem by implementing stricter emission controls on power plants. nadp.slh.wisc.edu/maps-data/nt...

Time for, well, not a distraction so much as a palate cleanser: a truly phenomenal shot from Hubble of a galaxy that is rippling like a pond that had a rock tossed in it… because that's what happened! Kinda. And YES you want to grab the hi-res version. badastronomy.beehiiv.com/p/incredible... 🧪🔭

Trump and the GOP are in a full-out war against science. I have a lot to say about that. badastronomy.beehiiv.com/p/the-attack... 🧪 🔭

Here are some nice mushrooms

Our dark Universe detective 🕵️ Euclid has discovered a stunning Einstein ring! 💍 It surrounds galaxy NGC 6505, which is acting as a gravitational lens, bending light from a distant galaxy behind it. Why is this rare phenomenon so useful for scientists? 👉 www.esa.int/Science_Expl... 🔭🧪 #cosmology

My colleagues at NOAA fear for their jobs. Their satellite observation today of accumulating heat stress (already above mortality thresholds) on the northern Great Barrier Reef: Yet again a deadly mass coral bleaching event is underway. Without NOAA, climate & reef scientists will be blind.

The entire planet needs to galvanize against the Musk/Trump coup in the U.S. for one crucial reason: these madmen now have access to the planet’s largest store of nuclear weapons.

I think this is my favourite report cover of all time. Any others?

Very cool new paper from Han et al. looking at hypervelocity stars. We thought they all came from binaries disrupted by the black hole in the Milky Way, but Gaia suggested some come from the LMC instead. Han suggests this comes from a small(er) black hole in the LMC! arxiv.org/abs/2502.00102

As a science advocate, something I hear a lot is that people think government would be better if there were more scientists and physicians elected to Congress. Senator Bill Cassidy's cowardice in voting for RFK Jr, show us that expertise is useless if you have no morals.

Nice high contrast colors on the ground and sky on Mars today Jan 31, sol 1404. In HDR even better when viewed with Chrome, Opera on Macbooks or with the areoHDR app: areo.info/mars20/ecams...

Varnishing Spectrum of Stardust this weekend! Always gives me a bit of anxiety to varnish, but now that this painting is an award winner I’m extra nervous 😆
