Sunday’s @thetimes.com cartoon times.newsprints.co.uk/morten-morla...

What a treat to spend two days in Edinburgh at, first, a super half-day event yesterday organised by Hayley and, today, to deliver a School seminar. If only the trains were as reliable as the hospitality!

The point about this House of Lords wine reception with the Cardiff Uni VC that has not received the attention it deserves is that, in Schools where some but not all staff will be made redundant, the affected individuals will be told their fate for the first time *the very next day*

Very enjoyable to do a two-hander with @danielbeland.bsky.social today at a seminar for the American Society for Public Administration about the cost-of-living crisis. And the nice thing about a lunchtime seminar, US time, is that you can go for something stronger than a coffee once it's done!

Two weeks into Cardiff University's 'consultation' on proposed redundancies, there remain significant questions about the parameters of the consultation, what form alternative solutions can take, and widespread confusion about the process. It's been very, very disappointing.

I'm sorry, but retirees and social workers to sign off assisted dying? Time to get real. www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

It was good to be at the Senedd today to speak with Equality and Social Justice Committee members about the Child Poverty Strategy monitoring framework

"A child poverty “strategy” that is silent on the needlessly cruel two-child limit would be a mockery.. it would also raise the question – again – of what this Labour government is for." spot on from @guardianheather.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/business/202...

The tariffs are mad; but what’s equally mad is that they somehow come as a surprise, when Trump has campaigned non-stop on this and controls all branches of government Precious time has been lost, but it’s not too late for countries to mount an effective response 1/x

What a distressing week for all at Cardiff Uni. Like all my colleagues in Social Sciences & many others I'm in the selection pool. Gutted for those in Schools scheduled to close. I hope the VC will think again - the proposed plan is neither the only nor the best way forward.

It was great to speak at @cpc-cg.bsky.social today, a brief respite from what's otherwise been a pretty grim week for all of us at Cardiff. Thanks for the invite & to those in attendance for thoughtful comments and questions!

Given the content of the letter from the independent advisor on ministerial standards to the Keir Starmer, it is remarkable that the PM goes so far as to say that the 'door remains open' to Tulip Siddiq

Even for the Guardian, this is incredible miserabilism

Yes! But also: pro-ubi papers that lean on cheap talk by Musk and others to suggest that basic income could command support from the left and the right, suggesting that such comments speak to its political feasibility, are trading in hot air.

Incredible that so few of the Korean ruling party voted for him to be impeached, really.

Important piece about Korean journalists' night of fear under Yoon's martial law, with armed troops stationed outside critic Kim Ou-joon's office forcing him into hiding, and others bracing for arrests. Six-hour decree posed real threat to press freedom. www.voanews.com/a/korean-jou...

Don't forget the curiosity of learning which small party will be put into the meat grinder.

So Marie Sherlock is elected in Dublin Central, moving ahead of the Monk on the final count. Ireland's wonderfully complex electoral system is delivering an engrossing second day of counting

Two more weeks and this becomes a Filipino dessert account for a month. Tonight, some pichi-pichi to whet the appetite.

I created this list a couple of days ago based on some people I know about but there has been a ton of new arrivals--please let me know who else to include. Also, this is an interdisciplinary list! #EconSky #Sociology #PoliSky #Demography go.bsky.app/T667spi

The House of Commons library team do a tremendous job in producing these reports. Here, on a matter of significant importance, there is no exception.

Hello, Bristol. I've missed you.

1. I saw a lot of people on Bluesky yesterday poking fun at Lindsay Graham saying that the U.S. would use financial sanctions to "crush" the economies of allies who tried to help the ICC. Graham is characteristically grotesque in his language, but I'm not laughing myself.
