I saw Grigorian’s Tatiana on OperaVision during the pandemic, a Barry Kosky production from the Komische. Completely different from Netrebko of course, but gripping and compelling. Barakova is very talented. Looking forward to this.

It’s a bit strange. I suspect Maestro Muti controls the rights to the score and for no apparent reason is reluctant to sanction other performances. Or am I entering into conspiracy theory territory here? 🤣

In a great stroke of luck, I heard 2 performances of it by Manhattan School of Music in late 2019 and then found this recording, the only one extant as far as I know. Somebody please per l’amore di Dio, program it. Don’t make me beg.

Everything to him is a business deal. He views international relations strictly in terms of trade deficit or surplus. It’s inconceivable to him that it’s in the interest of the US to defend Canada because it’s our entire northern border. If he can’t grasp that at the age of 78, he never will.

What struck me most forcibly was his handling of light. At times I’m left dazzled. Sources often hidden or partially obscured and yet they suffuse the entire canvas with glows of unworldly color. A powerful consolation for the tiny human lost in the vastness of creation.

Most people have probably seen this one which normally resides in Hamburg. It seems the perfect metaphor for the traveler. We acquire new vistas but much remains hidden, because we lack adequate historical or cultural context to understand what we see.

Said exhibition opened this week @metmuseum.org and I’ve just been to see it. I wasn’t particularly familiar with his work to begin with. My university art history courses largely managed to avoid him, presumably because he worked in Dresden and not Paris.

I noticed that the Alte Nationalgalerie also had a Caspar David Friedrich collection, so I decided to go back a few days later for that. When I returned, I discovered that most of their Friedrichs were on loan for an exhibition… in New York!

That was the one program disappointment. But still several others that never get done though already thanks to Oper Leipzig, I have seen Zar und Zimmerman once in my life.

Sad news indeed. I bought a copy of that recording on my recent visit to Leipzig (at the Gewandhaus shop). She had a lovely voice. I’m becoming a fan of Lortzing’s, so much so that I may attend Oper Leipzig’s Lortzing festival next year.

And I’d say that’s only a slight exaggeration and I wonder why. I think it’s a great piece, full of all the things I want from a Donizetti opera, above all glorious ensembles. A quick glance at the archives says the Met has done it exactly once, in 1904!

The evening’s standout for me was Maria Barakova’s Maffio Orsini. She combines beautiful tone with dramatic presence. I saw her twice in Pesaro last summer, a couple of times at the Met in the fall (Fenena in Nabucco) and each time I like her more.

Just discovered Dussmann last week. I was mostly there for the music, which had me in heaven. We no longer have “record stores” in the US, though in New York there are some good second hand stores. (Ok the Met gift shop has some CDs and DVDs.)
