#Earlyview #Openaccess 'The Green Economy and the Global South' by @hochstet.bsky.social #greeneconomy #globalsouth #RegGov See abstract 👇 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Together with @peternewell.bsky.social, I have a new paper out in RIPE. In this paper, we explore why and how the use of fossil hydrocarbons for non-energy purposes (as raw material for synthetics) changes how we should approach the climate crisis. 1/x www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

2 years on from THE BIG CON's publication Eternally grateful to everyone who has read it & to @mazzucatom.bsky.social for inviting me along for the ride One thing I'm proud of: that we managed to write a book of critical political economy that still finds its way into airport business book shelves

"The fact that Texas is now the overwhelming leader in the US renewables boom should at least give advocates of decarbonization through public power a lengthy pause." NEW: @bkodres93.bsky.social reviews Sandeep Vaheesan's Democracy in Power: A History of Electrification in the United States

For all the hoopla about (cheap) renewables growth, 2024 saw yet another annual increase in global power generation from fossil fuels (coal and gas both up) and associated CO2 emissions. Europe the only major region where emissions from power generation fell. Just awful.

Tuesday next week! Not sure the subtitle points to the most promising area to find disagreement among the panelists, but in any case, excited for this discussion with @brettchristophers.bsky.social, @danielagabor.bsky.social & @jonathanhopkin.bsky.social. In person (first come, first serve) & online

few things make me more disillusioned with how we have organised our economies than seeing the most brilliant family members, friends & colleagues unable to get jobs in areas they have dedicated their lives to (or at all). there is a lot that is shit & ineffective, but this is just soul-destroying

"Our research highlights an inconvenient truth, if you will, for politicians and businesspeople alike: we can’t simply depend on corporations and markets to address one of the gravest threats to our collective future" - @chriswrightau.bsky.social & Daniel Nyberg hbr.org/2017/11/how-...

I was just told that I have to remove “climate” from the title of an ongoing grant if I want to keep it. And publications from that grant cannot include “climate” and other forbidden words. I can’t believe I’m writing this from the United States of America. #AcademicSky

Come to Copenhagen this September! ✨ You’ll get to meet the best colleagues (inc @lenseabrooke.bsky.social & Olga Mikheeva who are co-organizing w @aminsamman.bsky.social ), chat cool new research, hear great keynotes & hang out in Copenhagen sun 🌞

tfw it wasn’t desk rejected 🍻

a qual caveat: my sense is that Scandinavia-based researchers still work all the time inc evenings & weekends but bc it's officially frowned upon & viewed as unsolidaristic (unlike in the UK where it's a badge of honour) 'visible' work - like meetings & submissions - is done in core hours

Sleaze policymaking in action at Treasury. Not malversation since Reeves became a lobbyist for free. “Reeves’s Heathrow third runway report was commissioned by London airport itself” www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Instead of letting people amass enough wealth that they can start foundations that non profits are dependent on, we should tax them so they can't hoard that wealth and use that money directly to fund orgs. Win-win

Hottest January on record mystifies climate scientists

“We are shocked and saddened by the news of Professor Michael Burawoy’s passing. His untimely death is a great loss to sociology & to movements for justice around the world.” @michaelabenson.bsky.social on a collegiate, courageous giant of the discipline. thesociologicalreview.org/announcement...

to understand the 'green capitalism' part of how the US got here, read our @benbraun.bsky.social account: colliding macrofinancial regimes - when China's Big Green State meets Biden's Robust Derisking, there is one winner. New @ripejournal.bsky.social www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Words that will get your project cancelled include 'historically' and 'women'

Today, Mute Compulsion has been out for two years. Huge thanks to everyone who has read, discussed, recommended, criticized, reviewed, edited, cited, published, bought, taught, and translated it. Publishing this book has been a such a wonderful, surprising, overwhelming, and moving experience. 1/3

there are few things I'm more excited to read at the moment than @triofrancos.bsky.social's new book

yes, yes and yes!

I did a piece about the political economy of climate breakdown for @londonreview.bsky.social, pivoting off the essential new book by Andreas Malm and @wimcarton.bsky.social. Please give it a read!

whomst among you was it that wrote the good take (in Jacobin?) on the Danish government's failed offshore wind tender at the end of last year, a la @brettchristophers.bsky.social? thank u 🙏

New article out in Energy Policy, co-authored with Jindan Gong, Björn Nykvist and @maxahman.bsky.social In this article, we study and compare the costs and subsidies for hydrogen-based steelmaking across the US and the EU. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Oooo looking forward to this. The Breakdown is such an greeat show, if you haven't started listening yet you are MISSING OUT PEOPLE!

I’ve ended up talking about and sharing versions of this paper more than I ever meant to over the past few years so I’ve done the thing I’m told is sensible and made a pre-print! All comments, queries and criticisms very welcome papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Chat GPT unionising and beginning strike action was the plot twist I didn't know I needed in this world.

Cursed top headline, blessed layout choice

Under Trump 1.0, liberal #Resistance politics was full of self-undermining contradictions—crucially, the inability to see Trump himself as a product of the deep crisis of American liberalism—but the apparent liberal resignation in the face of Trump 2.0 is much more concerning.

I've been looking forward to reading this since meeting @lbogner.bsky.social at the end of last year! A really great PhD project

Now out with New Political Economy: What's going on in the legal back-end of 'innovative' climate finance constructs? I provide some additional clues to why it's so hard to de-risk private climate finance by public means. Open access, too! www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
