I am grateful to @rowanwalrath.bsky.social, @helenbranswell.bsky.social, @melodyschreiber.com and all the other reporters covering this today for giving me a chance to book a CVS appointment today before the bottom falls out, which would leave my 3rd trimester unboosted cen.acs.org/pharmaceutic...

The FDA’s new COVID-19 vaccine guidance is here. Now what? cen.acs.org/pharmaceutic...

For @cenmag.bsky.social this week, @rowanwalrath.bsky.social took a look at what's been happening re COVID-19 vaccines in the US

Makary and Prasad have a sounding board piece written in NEJM about the future of COVID-19 vaccine regulation at the FDA. Some thoughts:

“With the Trump administration, there’s so many different things all at once,” says Zach Weinberg, CEO of biotech investment firm Curie.Bio. “Come next week, I’m sure there’ll be a whole new set of facts.” Chaos ably chronicled by @rowanwalrath.bsky.social today: cen.acs.org/pharmaceutic...

Today marks my 22nd work anniversary at @cenmag.bsky.social. My colleague @rowanwalrath.bsky.social points out that copper is the traditional gift for 22nd wedding anniversaries, so I thought I'd celebrate by posting this photo of the copper ball Barry Sharpless gave me.

Two excellent pieces of news about @cenmag.bsky.social reporters and their stories: First up, Priyanka Runwal's excellent article on efforts to treat sickle cell disease in India has won a AAJA 2025 Journalism Excellence Award. You can read that story here: cen.acs.org/pharmaceutic...

I am so honored that a feature I published in @cenmag.bsky.social in September, "R&D for long COVID is collapsing," was selected as a finalist among trade publications in the 2025 @nihcm.bsky.social Awards in Journalism and Research. I am in some great company here. nihcm.org/news/finalis...

Lol. They released their 400 page US version of the Cass Review and refused to even name who the authors were. It's a glorified book report. Anyway, this is out now y'all. I'll be looking it over today. opa.hhs.gov/sites/defaul...

The FDA's shift away from animal testing could be a windfall for makers of nonanimal models like organ chips, organoids, and computer simulations. But there will be challenges, especially given the FDA's outlined 3-5-year timeline. @cenmag.bsky.social #chemsky #biosky cen.acs.org/pharmaceutic...

Just how actively is Secretary Kennedy's #HHS going to disrupt vaccination regulation & policy? Multiple decisions that must come in the next couple of months will tell us lots. www.statnews.com/2025/04/30/r...

‪If you're a researcher with an NSF grant that has been terminated or with a proposal now stuck in limbo, I'd like to hear from you. My signal is kvasquez.12. Anonymity is always an option.

Per source, NIH has been instructed to hold off from issuing ALL awards to Harvard, Cornell, Columbia, Brown, and Northwestern (including med schools) Agency staff have also been instructed to not speak about this funding freeze to grantees and applicants

Scoop for @reuters.com: On Friday, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission will stop collecting data on injuries from incidents like car accidents and adverse drug effects due to staff cuts at the CDC. www.reuters.com/business/hea...
