Under new guidance this week from the FDA’s top brass, annual COVID-19 boosters will be authorized only for people 65 years old and older, as well as people with certain health risks, including asthma and diabetes.

I am most grateful to the people who spoke so candidly to me for that story, which aimed to show how financial disincentives have kneecapped attempts to develop treatments for long COVID -- a chronic, multisystemic, still poorly understood disease that has affected hundreds of millions of people.

The cancelations had impacted up to 45 pathobiology studies funded through NIH's RECOVER initiative. It's not clear whether the NIH reinstated all the impacted RECOVER grants, but one researcher tells patient advocate Megan Fitzgerald that some or all of the terminations “may have been rescinded.”
