Time for some astronaut training! πŸ‘©β€πŸš€ We've been celebrating the start of Space Week 2025 with two half-term family fun days at the Geological Society. Children (and a dinosaur!) have been finding out what it's like to repair a spacecraft in space, as well as how to pick up 'Moon' rocks!

Calling all students! Have you ever considered becoming a Fellow of the RAS? Whether you've only recently embarked on your astronomy or geophysics related degree, or you're a postgraduate student, you're eligible to apply. For more info, visitπŸ‘‡ https://buff.ly/3Dej1v8

Dr Thiemann concludes her talk by saying it is "not just the science or technological advances that inspire people to work in space, it is the chance to be part of something much bigger than ourselves and to explore the future". #Space #Inspiration #PublicTalk ‡️

So, what inspires people to work in the space sector? Dr Thiemann first reveals that 90% of children and 75% of adults have some interest in space. In terms of getting into the sector, historic events, books and TV are what most inspire people...

Our first Public Talk of the day about why people work in space is now under way. πŸ‘©β€πŸš€πŸ”πŸš€ Dr Heidi Thiemann is discussing the current UK space industry landscape, focusing in particular on future small satellite launch capabilities. πŸ›°οΈ ‡️

Bookings for today's RAS Public Talk have now ended. However, if you want to see Dr Heidi Thiemann share findings from the 2024 Space Census to find out what inspires people to work in the space sector, you can still watch the lecture on our YouTube channel at 1pm. πŸš€πŸ‘©β€πŸš€ ➑️ https://buff.ly/4k4Tmpj

🚨 Last chance! 🚨 Our next @royalastrosoc.bsky.social Public Talk is taking place tomorrow but if you want to come along there are just a few hours left to secure your spot. Bookings for the 13:00 GMT talk close at 17:00 GMT today and 11:00 GMT tomorrow for the 18:00 GMT lecture. ‡️

What better way to start the week than with a bit of research! πŸ” Astronomers led by Stanford University have made a "needle in the haystack" discovery of a powerful explosion from a mysterious unknown object outside our galaxy. πŸ’₯🌌 ‡️

#ICYMI Professor Dr Isobel Hook of Lancaster University has been awarded the 2025 Caroline Herschel Medal for her "pioneering" work on distant supernovae and the accelerating universe! πŸŒŒπŸ’«πŸ… Congratulations! πŸŽ‰ #WomenInSTEM #Astronomy Read more ➑️ https://buff.ly/3EBkg8f

Hurry, hurry! πŸƒ There are just 2 days to go to book your tickets for Tuesday's Public Talk about why people devote their careers to working in the space sector. πŸš€πŸ”πŸ›°οΈ ‡️

There's a glowing and brightly coloured end to today's A&G Highlights meeting... as the James Dungey Lecture is all about the Northern Lights! Dr Gabby Provan, of the University of Leicester, is exploring the underlying processes that produce this dazzling natural spectacle on Earth. ‡️

Over at the Geological Society, retired space engineer Terry Ransome – the last person to touch Beagle 2 – has been discussing his involvement with the Skylark rocket. The meeting will then be closed by Professor John Zarnecki, Emeritus Professor at The Open University... ‡️

Vigil Mission Scientist Matthew West is now giving a status update on the ESA spacecraft, which is due to launch in 2031. It will be Europe's first 24/7 operational space weather satellite, monitoring the Sun for the energetic outbursts it sends towards Earth. ‡️

Our February Specialist Discussion Meetings are now under way. At the @royalastrosoc.bsky.social, Justin Le Louëdec, a postdoctoral researcher at Austrian Space Weather Office, is delivering a talk about space-weather science from the fifth Lagrange point. ‡️

Tomorrow we'll be hosting our latest monthly Specialist Discussion Meetings πŸš€ πŸ›°οΈ February's topics are space-weather science from the fifth Lagrange point and the history of the Skylark rocket + its impacts on astronomy & geophysics research. ‡️

Today's @royalastrosoc.bsky.social Friends lecture is now under way. Imperial College planetologist Dr Steven Banham is discussing Mars Curiosity and how the Red Planet was once habitable for extraterrestrial life. Interested in becoming a Friend of the RAS? Join us at: https://buff.ly/4hqeDZA

🚨 Reminder 🚨 There is less than a week left to book your tickets for our next Public Talk! πŸ—£οΈ Join Dr Heidi Thiemann, co-founder of the Space Skills Alliance, as she explores what drives people to work in the space sector. πŸš€πŸ” ‡️

🚨 Exciting announcement 🚨 Professor Dr Isobel Hook has been awarded the 2025 Caroline Herschel Medal for her "pioneering" work on distant supernovae and the accelerating universe! 🌌 πŸ’«πŸ… Congrats Professor Hook! #WomenInSTEM #Astronomy https://buff.ly/3EBkg8f

Last month we announced the winners of the 2025 Royal Astronomical Society Awards. But we have one more addition to the list... an Honorary Fellowship awarded to Professor Francesca Matteucci. πŸ₯³ ‡️

We've got a busy couple of weeks at RAS HQ! πŸ˜…πŸš€ Thursday: Friends only lecture w/ Dr Steven Banham on the Mars rover Curiosity. 🟠 Friday: SDMs on space-weather science and the Skylark rocket, plus an A&G Highlights meeting w/ talks on Saturn and the Northern Lights. πŸͺ ‡️

Here's our final stargazing challenge of the week! πŸŒ™βœ¨ Spot Mars in the Night Sky! βœ¨πŸŒ™ When you spot the Moon tonight, it will be right next to Mars, the Red Planet. Can you see Mars' reddish colour? ‡️

Today is the last day of National Astronomy Week 😒 It flew by! πŸš€ But it's not over yet! There are still plenty of events and activities taking place across the country. To find one near you, scan the QR code in the graphic. ‡️

Thanks to everyone who came to see us at European AstroFest yesterday! It was another great day. πŸ’« πŸš€ Remember, you can join us as a Friend or Fellow. To find out more, visit: https://ras.ac.uk/membership

There are now just THREE nights left to 'chase the Moon' for National Astronomy Week πŸ’« πŸͺ Are you out and about stargazing this evening? Or attending one of the 275+ events that have been taking place across the UK this week? Why not try tonight's challenge! πŸŒ™βœ¨ Find Jupiter in the Night Sky! βœ¨πŸŒ™ ‡️
