Rachel's new book considers gender, identity and the recreation of lives in apartheid South Africa. Central is the figure of Mary Masabata Loate, of whom Rachel writes a 'shadow biography'.

Panel Grants seek to bring together historians at various career stages and from a range of professional backgrounds - as well as providing funding for independent historians without institutional support to present on a panel.
Applications now invited before the closing date of 23 May.

Our new guide bit.ly/43RJh9x advises applicants to speak now with their institutions, to gain assurances of buyout given the workloads involved.
We hope HEIs, in turn, will appreciate the importance and labour of subject panels, and be supportive of those considering membership.

A key message is be aware of the very heavy workloads and time-commitment involved in being a panellist.
We do not consider REF's current guidance of a '40-60 days' commitment between 2026 & 2029 accurate for History and other Panel D subjects, based on the experience of members for REF2021, 3/4 ๐

'Hitavadi' was the first Telugu-language literary journal, founded in 1862 by John Edmund Sharkey of the Church Missionary Society.
Emerging from the turbulence of post-1857 colonial India, the journal shaped the vernacular public sphere in Telugu-speaking regions of colonial South Asia.
