I don’t know about red milkweed specifically, but monarchs can use several different kinds.

I have a newborn! And looks like the other egg will hatch soon. 🌱 🥲

Me too, although I call them “noun stacks.” Thanks for sharing the article, I am looking forward to reading it in detail.

Could be the deer, I suppose. The bear didn’t hang around after it ate all the birdseed, so it seems an unlikely culprit.

I got the setup here: monarchbutterflylifecycle.com

When the eggs have hatched, I will fill the tube with water and put fresh milkweed in it, then put the caterpillars on the milkweed. They attach to the roof (usually) when they pupate.

We actually get 2 generations each summer.

Mine is far from blooming, and most of it has been chomped down by the resident bunnies. I haven’t even seen any butterflies yet! But this batch happened to come up safely inside the garden fence and lo and behold: eggs!

I will be carrying a flag at today’s protest. We shouldn’t forget that it emerged from our original fight against a king.

Seems like a reasonable concern in response to completely unreasonable actions.

I can see how that would be an issue. Personally, I would still cite the intermediary: According to X et al, who cites [obscure 1827 book]…

Ooh a little too close to home

In college, my phone number was one digit off from a cab company. Got calls at all times asking for rides. I’m a little ashamed to say I would sometimes say “be right there” (without them saying where they were) and hang up. But if I ever need a cab in that region, I still know the number!

Sorry, no disrespect intended. I work on making articles in the peer-reviewed literature better. Many scientists aren’t taught how to write, or have other barriers to writing well, but there is (non-AI!) help for them, too.

Ok, gotta chime in. Scientific papers don’t *have* to be hard to read. There is a world of editors and writers (and coaches and book authors) whose goal is to make them more understandable to more people.

Running yourself into the ground will help no one. Do what you can, and one of those things is to ask for help. Cared for in-laws and my parents. Mom is the last one left (90 with dementia) and is in a wonderful facility 1000 miles from me. Still plenty to do from here. I get there when I can.

I was excited to see a goldfinch at my feeder this morning, but it didn’t want its picture taken. We’ve been hearing the cardinals for a few weeks now. A sign of climate change that they are this far north (n. MN), but I grew up with them and they make me happy.

Just can’t bring myself to “like” this.

So many questions!

My rep too. I have left lots of messages and am thrilled to see the regular protests at his local office. And glad to see this one get wider attention! He is clearly only interested in hearing from constituents who already agree with him, but he has to have noticed how many have real objections

Hmm, looks like system might have changed. Look for the Gardening feed. It used to be run by @eepy.bsky.social maybe not anymore? Anyway, the feed is a good place to get started, and maybe you can just post now. But add the emoji!

Beautiful gardens! Check out the Gardening feed—posts with a 🌱 wind up there (but you have to ask for posting privilege s)

Hmm. I’m much too far north for that to grow natively. I’ll keep my eyes open for it though. Have you tried rooting some harvested from nature?
comment in response to post
I don’t. What should I know?

Cool, thanks!

They look like this. We’ve seen them for sale in the UK but not the US
