Also found on Medium (while I also reflect on where I want my writing to live, primarily, if I can actually make myself get back to writing, regularly, as I intend - @sboots.mastodon.sboots.ca.ap.brid.gy I may be asking your advice on that) if that's more your jam: rumon.medium.com/on-the-tensi...

“Pay some locals to become vehement supporters of the idea, create some protests in favour, big it up in social media and then have ‘supporters’ demanding the US intervenes aka manufacture a crisis." ~ @swardley.bsky.social, who has an unfortunately strong track record at analyzing statecraft

You know what’s great about Mystic Beach? That it’s not hidden. That we’ve protected parts of nature so close to us that feel removed and magical and yet are still accessible for all British Columbians to enjoy. YOU MISSED THE ENTIRE POINT BECAUSE YOU AREN’T INTERESTED IN LOCAL PEOPLE

I thought the same. Ed’s a Quesnel boy (as was my previous rescue also), so has Interior roots.

💯. My clown’s perspective, currently … and, from my perspective, a vibe that’s kinda always in order. 😉

The distinction I’d make is that these positions are not limited to Trump & his inner circle. That said, both things can be true: We’re seeing a fairly broad shift towards retrograde policy and social positions, and the way to address these is not indiscriminate rejection of all members of a nation.

“The bureaucracy” is humans, mostly humans with deep experience. Without the bureaucracy, government ceases to function. I appreciate that’s the goal of Republicans, but I think the loss of those committed humans is going to create problems that we cannot anticipate. Maybe opportunities, too.

Was just cruising your “back catalogue” of writings … the relevance, again, of your COVID catalyzed scholarship isn’t lost on me. Generally, thank you for providing companionship for a few future afternoons of reading.

If you’re really masochistic, you can find all 500 or so pages of the thing here:

What’s available to others, observing from elsewhere, is to apply EXACTLY what Elon otherwise espouses: Be curious. Do independent research. Talk to those who preceded you & ask what they would do differently. Be courageous. Buck norms. Experiment. There is better governance available…that way 5/5

More broadly, his enablers, celebrators and copycats-in-waiting in other jurisdictions are applying their interpretations of effective company management and applying it to government(s). This is the antithesis of first principles thinking and intervention. 4/x

… [With first principles] you boil things down to the most fundamental truths…and then reason up from there.” DOGE is applying to the US fedgov, by analogy, Musk’s approach to company management. What someone else (he) has done. If reasoning at all, it’s horizontally, into a foreign context. 3/x

Musk: “I think it’s important to reason from first principles rather than by analogy. The normal way we conduct our lives is we reason by analogy. [With analogy] we are doing this because it’s like something else that was done, or it is like what other people are doing… 2/x

Always a cup refilling experience to share space, ideas and intentions with groups like these. Thank you for holding the space with your typical combination of passion, provocation and care, David.

Big thanks. I’m pretty acutely attuned to this.
