It’s more than this, obviously. It’s about behavior, choices. I would add convictions but doubt the guy actually has them. He’s fundamentally transactional. The Nozdryov of US political life.

Spitting out winter

Swasticar. Not a good look.

Strange goings on just to the south of us. Can’t wait to ask when the shrimp truck that comes up periodically comes up next time where exactly they’re coming from!

Being so behind on deadlines has meant I haven’t been able to respond to the many calls from the apps on my phone. This has been OK. Perhaps more than OK. Bye-bye (again). Here’s a pic of my 94-year-old mom waving to all.

Not a smart move, T Mob, partnering with Musky’s satellite network. Might have considered it but nah.

Treating one form of electricity generation as more conservative, liberal, or patriotic is wacky. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/28/o...

I feel a little bad for Mexico, but on the other hand, it is so DEI considerate of the current president to want to rename the gulf after the Americas, as opposed to just one country.

Icefest ping pong

Hair cut! Doing my best, Antonio Banderas imitation. I know I know. Imitation, I said!

It has slowly dawned on me that when a geologist refers to a particular part of the world as “doomed,” it’s usually meant as something like a metaphor to non-geologists.

Please ignore him

Just watched the 2023 documentary What The Hell Happened To Blood, Sweat and Tears. Really good.

Boldness (2): … “Limestone is between the hardness of jade and the softness of clay. This intermediate substance is the mean of European art. It demands neither to be moulded like the clay, nor minutely whittled like the jade; but to be boldly carved.” From Adrian Stokes’s 1934 *Stones of Rimini*

Boldness (1): “If, from the angle of their visual arts, we call the European countries calcareous countries, then China and Japan are siliceous countries. For, the two substances we feel to be most representative of far eastern art, clay and jadeite, are both silicates. …

Trying to get my 94-year-old mom to eat. I’m a good cook. She’s just not interested. Maybe tomorrow.

Now that the semester is basically done, I can finally look more carefully (i.e., read) this book I’ve been carrying around in my bag.

I finished M. T, Anderson’s *Nicked*. I wish I liked it more. It started off strong. I was esp into it at the end of Part 1. Then it veered off, bogged down in minutiae. The relics became bones, the book less and less substantial. Too bad.

When doing your research, it’s smart to remember the “and careful inquiry of the neighbors” part.

Sorry but this is funny

So far 9 have signed up for my spring course “Nature & Culture in the Adriatic,” aka, “Human-Nature in the Sea of Intimacy.“ Yes, this is related to my book in progress. Yes, it’s a luxury (for me). 9 is not a lot, true, but in the parlance of enrollment management, it’s close enough for jazz.

Boy No. 2 played the Engineer in a student production of Miss Saigon last night, with two more performances today. He did great, but what a stereotype-filled musical it was (and still is)!

Using the institution’s “neutrality policy” as a blanket way of not issuing any statements looks a lot like shirking responsibility for exercising judgment about which statements the institution ought to make statements about.

My Azorian grandfather used to make these for his many grandchildren. He died when I was young, but I think this is one of his. He believed it was important. I don’t think he was wrong.

A damp, drizzly November in my soul. Except it’s December.

Here is a nice mushroom

Took this pic in the Basilica di San Tommaso in Ortona earlier this year, though it seems a lifetime ago. In some ways, it was. Like the personage depicted, I often doubt.
