So one of the things that I think is lost on AI proponents is what I call the card catalog effect, a thing I shouldn’t call it because a lot of people probably have no experience with a card catalog.

It is "President's Day" so I'd love to encourage you to read this short Nat'l Parks Service biography of Mary McLeod Bethune (1875-1955) whose lifetime work included education, civil rights activism, equality for women's, & her work in FDR's administration & New Deal. www.nps.gov/people/mary-...

This is one of my favorite poems of all time, written by the wonderful & greatly missed John M. Ford. I’ve been thinking about it a lot recently. So I thought I would share it.

Rest In Peace, Tom Robbins, and long live goofiness!

When we unionized a few years ago, a lot of peanut gallery types on social media wanted to tell me it would be the end of Wired. Hope it’s now clear (thanks mostly to our insanely talented and hardworking politics team) that it does not work that way. Unions are good.

We just launched a 16TB archive of every dataset that has been available on data.gov since November. This will be updated day by day as new datasets appear. It can be freely copied, and we're sharing the code behind it to help others make their own archives of data they depend on.

Where is the civic disaster dashboard is I guess what I’m saying? There is a *ton* of fantastic specialist reporting on every issue but the mechanics are what matter and they’re buried in the flood. I don’t want to know “what happened today,” I want to see the whole board.

A Pacific Islander radio news show did a full segment reviewing Weird Fishes, and it made me cry big salty tears. Reviews are for readers and not writers, but HEARING that your work hit home with its audience? Dang. 🥹😭 Listen here: www.abc.net.au/pacific/prog... #kanakasky #booksky

Indivisible is urging people to visit their senators' local offices between now and Thursday to demand that they use every tool—including denying a quorum and blocking unanimous consent—to fight the confirmation of Project 2025 architect Russell Vought for head of OMB docs.google.com/document/d/1...

This is a blip in a world of sirens, but I want to remind the SFF community that Friday is the deadline to have a 2025 WSFS membership in hand if you want to nominate for this year's Hugo Awards.

Great long thread about similar strategies I've been discussing here for riding waves of uncertainty. I learned a lot the first time round and had a plan in place this time that has WORKED. 1. Focus on what you can control 2. Limit your inputs

Swift Circles Around the Sun is a workplace comedy for very online millennial women, undiagnosed neurodivergent professionals, frustrated creatives, Indigenous land protectors, & readers who want characters to be a smidge more charming than the ones they have to deal with every day. #2025pit #A #HA

An incredible photo from Berlin this evening. An estimated 100,000 have been on the streets in the German capital today to protest against the Far Right and fascism in Europe. #Resist (📸 Ricarda Lang)

It’s taken six years of carting trees indoors and out but last night I cooked with a lemon I grew myself.

“At the turn of the 21st century, Internet-associated tech companies that are now household names were just starting up. Many presented an image of being fun & lighthearted, through whimsical names, amenities for software developers, & mottos like ‘don’t be evil.’” firstmonday.org/ojs/index.ph...

The Internet Archive is great, but it is never more vulnerable to legal action than now and has also responded to take down requests in the past. That's necessary, The Archive as a whole should preserve itself. So, if the federal government hosts something important to you, archive it yourself.

Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter are being expressly used for fascist propaganda, control, and targeted attacks. They are unsafe. If you have to be there, be there, but it's not ceding the digital space to leave fascist platforms for new and safe alternatives. Community is where we make it.

yes free speech is under threat and the world is on fire but everybody look at this strawberry:

The TikTok ban, the Musk Twitter takeover, the Facebook moderation policy changes, the Republicans’ rapidly intensifying crackdowns on speech... let these be the proof you needed to move anything you care about online to a space you control. Digital sovereignty is more important than ever.

This is today (1/19) at noon CT/1:00 ET! KJ Charles can't be there, so it'll be me, @older.bsky.social and @tkingfisher.com
