While looking through the refs I sent, one thing that seems to incentivize me to be a repeat client is an artist's rendition evoking the personality of my OCs. It feels like the artist gets on the same wavelength to channel them and gets in touch with the emotive root of the OC, not just the design.

Perhaps art friends should network their offerings like local small businesses do. Even when their own queue is full, they can have agreements to repost comm sheets and refer clients.
Making it sustainable involves converting one-off commissions into recurring clients, much like any small business.
