Literally only a few weeks ago I was reading an article speculating that the wildfire smoke would hopefully not be as bad this year and yet here we are, there's a big wildfire in Canada and the Detroit area has some of the worst air quality in America once again. I guess this is what summer is now.

This is so lame but it's a true story which is almost a perfect distillation of me: I saw a butterfly that I wanted to take a picture of and my phone just would not focus correctly and I immediately went online and ordered a new phone.

Setting up a roving tabindex for keyboard navigation in a React app is so unbelievably frustrating. All of the HTML is right there but you can't trust it and have to track so much extra junk in JavaScript! Accessibility is already hard but React makes it so much harder.

Alright I might actually be hitting a breaking point of needing to upgrade my phone, but I feel dumb and wasteful because literally my only problem is that my current phone is bad at macro-photography and I'm having a hard time taking good photos of insects in my garden. Ugh

I have been sick for a week and I just read about "something going around" in a subreddit, which I guess is how I get my information now that the CDC is officially spending the next four years determining when and how microscopes became gay.

I just used a container query and it was awesome! There's so much cool stuff in CSS and you can use it!

I've been playing those dumb puzzle games on LinkedIn because I have a disease where I can't turn down daily puzzles, but when you perform well one of the badges they show will be something like "smarter than 90% of CEOs". If CEOs are the benchmark for high intelligence, god help us all

I'm sure part of this phenomenon is that anything reasonably priced gets snapped up quickly, but sellers on Facebook marketplace are out of their minds. There are people trying to sell used 30-year-old saws for maybe 10-20% less than you could get a brand new one for.

I have been deep in DIY mode this weekend... - Finished building a rain barrel stand and hooked up 2 rain barrels - Replaced 2 bathroom faucets + drains - Fixed a leaking hose bib - Replaced a light fixture Satisfying, but exhausting. Ready to collapse and do nothing.

I really wish service workers could access a native HTML parser API like `DOMParser`. I understand that DOMParser isn't designed to be used outside of a document environment, but I hate pulling in a 3rd party library for something that the browser could do much more efficiently.

I have reached the age + years of homeownership combo where the thing I want the most in the world right now is a nice miter saw

I made breakfast tacos this morning but didn't have cheese on hand so I just added some nutritional yeast to the eggs, and I can't believe how good it was. That's a good trick I'm going to reach for more often

Got a bunch of goodies from the native plant nursery today and so far my biggest takeaway is wow, Golden ragwort smells INCREDIBLE. I was enjoying it the whole car ride home.

At some point recently I've just started waking up with the sunrise even if my alarm is set for later or I don't have one set. Not sure if this is a getting older thing or my body is telling me to be a farmer

apparently Elon's gotten so mad about Grok not answering questions about Afrikaners the way he wants, xAI's now somehow managed to put it into some kind of hyper-Afriforum mode where it thinks every question is about farm murders or the song "Kill the Boer"

I cannot believe the Mavericks got the first pick. There's no justice in this world

Despelote is an incredibly special game, I would really recommend taking the 2 hours to play it. It's too rare to find a game like this which is a truly personal work of art.

Controversial opinion: redirecting your RSS feed to a fancy styled HTML version when someone opens it in a browser is flashy and cool on the surface but I hate it. If I want to see a styled list of your blog posts I would hope that's available in a better form on your site. Let me see the XML!

I just installed a garbage disposal and hooked up a bunch of plumbing all by myself after being quoted $1500 for someone else to do it and my main takeaways are: 1. This stuff is so easy to figure out, it's not as scary as you think it is 2. Wow there's a lot of money in plumbing

We put out a bee house this year and we already have our first resident!

pov ur on a next.js site

Between Blue Prince, South of Midnight, and now Skin Deep, my backlog of games I know I'll love but haven't been able to make time to play any of them is growing out of control

We've been in the process of renovating our kitchen since before Trump and it's been very exciting getting closer to the installation date and feeling increasingly concerned about whether we should've spent all that money. The only good news is we were able to mostly lock in pre-tarrif prices

Can vibe coding increase velocity? Yes, in fact it speeds up the entire product lifecycle, from first deployment to embarrassing hack that steals all your customers' money and leads to the company being shut down for gross negligence.

Spam/scam calls have been very quiet for me for a long time but over the last couple days I'm just getting incessant scam calls trying to scare me about taxes. Hopefully it'll chill after the filing deadline passes next week

You have to admit "behaviour" is a much more delightful spelling. Just get every vowel in there

when you ran out the healthy arms, you ran out of really healthyβ€” they had great arms but they ran out. it’s called sports. it’s called baseball in particular and pitchers i guess you could say, really particular

Woah hold up declarative shadow DOM is available across all modern browsers? Can't believe I missed that one

I still cannot believe how easy this was to get going. Entirely from one bottle of store-bought kombucha. I got impatient with my first batch and bottled too early but hopefully I can make some good refinements the second time around

Why on earth doesn't Safari support requestIdleCallback? Absolutely asinine

I got a refurbished reMarkable tablet recently and I'm a big fan. One of the dumb things I'm looking forward to using it for is puzzle games that require note-taking. I've been wanting to try Lorelei and the Laser Eyes for a while and this will be perfect for that

Tonight I surfed the web until I learned there is a tiny possum that eats nectar like a hummingbird. I can't top that. Time to sleep.

I like my website. It's fairly clean and works. But I'm very jealous of all you folks with super stylish personal sites that are just unmistakably yours. I don't know if I feel like my site is *MY* site you know? There might be a redesign coming someday, if I can get past the creative block

reposting this banger, good day to you

I keep writing technical-focused blog posts but I have so many other hobbies and interests I'd like to write about too. Just need to force myself to make time for it

I'm into home coffee roasting and there's a very painful trend in most of the online roasting groups where you get tons of "I'm new to this, rate my roast!" posts and almost all of them are someone taking some incredibly nice high quality beans and turning them into charcoal.

White tea is the new sensation sweeping our household. There are a bunch of claims that it's a magical super food (super drink?) but I take absolutely zero stock in that. It just tastes nice

It looks like Feedly includes the number of people subscribed to your RSS feed in their user agent header, that's a really nice touch

I have an idea for a side project using weather data and NOAA has a great free API available but it feels like there's a very strong chance that all of that will be dissolved and privatized within a year. Such a shame

Do you ever think about the silverware at the bottom of the drawer which has never been used because you always wash and replace the ones on top too quickly
