I feel you. I am trying to work on my own appearance against how my body works little-by-little, but chronic conditions make it very difficult.

What I found success with and do myself, is to use a hair cutter to leave a couple of mm of hair. It has never caused an inflammation in years, and works just as well.
You will probably notice an immediate difference - your bulge will be more noticeable, and doing things will feel much nicer!

It is probably not a good idea to shave them flat.
The skin around there is sensitive, and using a razor will cause your hair follicles to get inflamed, giving you an itch and possibly creating zits. Not to mention that your underwear *will* catch on them.

One thing I found that helps, is to do something relaxing before distracting yourself with something else!
Washing and drying my hair before classes saved me many times from spiralling into a very bad mood on campus for example.
