🧵(1/3) Several cool new #braincancer and brain #metastases studies in #NatureMedicine this week! First up, presenting MethyLYZR, a new, super rapid (15 min!) epigenetic sequencing classifier for brain tumors. #NeuroSky #OncSky #MedSky www.nature.com/articles/s41...

💯 Thank you @statnews.com for getting to the heart of the matter and keeping attention on this outbreak when it's already off the front pages of major newspapers. No child has died of measles in this country in decades, this is not normal and the response should be proactive, not dismissive.

I talked to NIH officials, current and former, about what's been happening inside the agency since the Trump administration shut down their grantmaking pipeline in January. Their stories showed just how willing our new leaders are to break the law: www.theatlantic.com/health/archi...

As the #measles outbreak continues, and has now unfortunately resulted in the death of a child, I see a lot of posts along the lines of: "I had measles as a child and I'm fine". Let me tell you a different version of that story: 🧵1/11 🧪 #medsky

Local health officials say one child has died of measles - not 2, as RFK claims. RFK downplayed the outbreak, saying people have been hospitalized for quarantine. That's wrong. He said this wasn't unusual, instead of saying it's sad & preventable w/ vaccines. See kffhealthnews.org/news/article...

Sec. Kennedy, you're incorrect. This *is* an unusual year for measles. This year has already passed 8 out of the past 15 years' *annual* counts. And we are only 2.5 months into 2025. Rather than falsehoods, you should publicly state support for MMR. Today marks the first measles death in 10 years.

Multiple news outlets now reporting that an unvaccinated child has died from #measles in the ongoing outbreak in Texas. This is incredibly sad and was also entirely preventable. Still waiting to hear from our HHS secretary...

Inexplicably, US administration has launched an unprecedented assault on science, on research institutions & on vital international organizations & initiatives. An assault on science anywhere is an assault on science everywhere; the global community must unite 🧪 www.nature.com/articles/d41...

🧵 (1/3) We have a massive measles outbreak in one of the largest states in the country. I have yet to see any major news outlet actively question the HHS secretary or HHS leadership. If this were happening under the previous administration, this lack of response would be all over the news. #MedSky

🌟NEW in #NatureMedicine: Analysis of breast cancer incidence and mortality in 185 countries shows disparities between high-income and low and middle-income countries #OncSky #MedSky #BreastCancer www.nature.com/articles/s41...

🚗 Nice write-up in @nature.com about our recent #NatureMedicine #CARTcells paper, which can be found here: www.nature.com/articles/s41... #OncSky #MedSky #PedSky #immunotherapy

Texas won't do this analysis so ProPublica did 👏 Clear demo of how dangerous abortion bans are for women's health #MedSky

Meanwhile, crickets from the HHS and our new HHS secretary...this is the worst outbreak in Texas in *30* years surely it merits SOME guidance? And some advocacy/rapid support for MMR vaccination in the region? Would love to see more media outlets specifically ask the HHS for comment.

Incredible story -- in utero treatment (an oral gene-targeting drug) for Spinal Muscular Atrophy; the child is now almost 3 and has no signs of disease! www.nejm.org/doi/full/10....

🌟NEW in #NatureMedicine: the longest reported cancer remission after #CARTcell therapy (19 years)! No additional therapy needed. Encouraging news for the ongoing development of #CARTcells in solid tumors #PedSky #OncSky #MedSky #immunotherapy #neuroblastoma www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Everyone, but especially parents, should be familiar with the CDC's recommended #vaccine schedule lest this go missing in the ongoing Trump admin purge 👇 Remember that you can get some shots earlier! The MMR vaccine can be started as early as 6 months (your 👶 will still need 2 more shots later).

Since RFK Jr just got confirmed today, I am taking this chance to share this wonderful @sciam.bsky.social piece on The Staggering Success of Vaccines www.scientificamerican.com/article/see-...

My editorial on the indirect cuts. This is an opportunity for campuses to come together to make the case for higher education. Leaders need to step up and ask for support and lead. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

🚗 NEW #NatureMedicine paper reports results from a first-in-human trial of CAR-macrophages! Safe & feasible to manufacture, efficacy limited. More work needed in this space! @natureportfolio.nature.com #immunotherapy #CARTcells #macrophages www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Thought it might be good to put some human faces on NIH indirects. We had an IT guy at Stanford who supported school of medicine even though he could have made way more at a tech company. Said both his parents died of cancer. Though not a researcher, this is the way he said he could help the mission

Using national registry data from Denmark, 30 maternal diagnoses linked to offspring autism were identified with most associations attributable to family-level factors rather than direct causal effects of maternal diagnoses, according to a paper in Nature Medicine. 🧪

New out in #NatureMedicine: In the ph 3 #CEPHEUS trial, #daratumumab + bortezomib, lenalidomide & dexamethasone (D-VRd) in transplant-ineligible or transplant-deferred newly diagnosed #MultipleMyeloma showed deeper & more durable increase in #MRD responses vs VRd. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Bravo @bmj.com! 👏

Yeah, I'm sure that RFK Jr will do this /s 🙄 And even if he does, what then will you do? Based on past experience, absolutely nothing. This performative monologue may ease your conscience, Sen Cassidy, but you have abandoned the oath you took as a doctor. Shameful.

Here is a gift link to this excellent article that paints a realistic picture of what a less vaccinated America will look like. There are ongoing measles outbreaks in Houston and Atlanta to large cities. CDC can't update on these. www.theatlantic.com/health/archi...

Vaccines have saved + continue to save millions of lives from infectious diseases. It is normal to have questions about how they work & what makes a successful vaccine. In that spirit here are 3 excellent articles from people worth listening to - pls share:

Thank you to @statnews.com for continuing to report on this and talking to actual people who are directly impacted. Researchers have not been "exaggerating" the purge of info at the CDC. Just because the CDC website is still live doesn't mean the changes in these last days are inconsequential.

Timely and interesting interview with some of the organizers of March for Science in 2017. In the face of numerous attacks on science and health research, still waiting to see whether something similar emerges this time around @aniloza.bsky.social @statnews.com www.statnews.com/2025/01/31/t...

To help people understand the importance of NIH, share what you’ve used their funding for (in easily understandable terms). I’ll start: my NIH postdoc funding helped me develop and test AI tools that could identify skin cancer across diverse skin tones.

Why should the public care about the freeze on the NIH? Aside from the need for scientific pursuits to make our society better… -For every dollar we invest in NIH research, there is a $2.5 return. -Research dollars help fund universities that employ non-academics. (1/)

👏 Great keynote from @pamelakunzmd.bsky.social at #GI25 talking about the importance of inclusivity in medicine. During such a sad week, it's nice to hear a note of hope.
