To prevent black photos/white canvases in your Sims 4 game, make sure to save your game before you exit. There's currently a bug where the picture textures aren't saved to the save game if you just save & Exit. So click save (or save as) first and then exit the game.

American Arcadia (from the folks behind Call of the Sea?) from 2023 was a 3/5 game, IMO. It reminded in certain ways of The Silent Age. AA had good meta with good but frustrating puzzles. *But* for a 5/5 puzzle game from that same year, I highly recommend Chants of Sennaar. (I think indie GotY?)
