The weight of the world's poultry, billions of animals crammed into cages, is more than *twice* that of wild birds. The link with pandemics is well known. www.irishtimes.com/health/2025/...

“The fight at the heart of the German election is simmering everywhere…The left, meanwhile, is still at its most passionate hating other people on the left and still at its liveliest finding nuance and idiosyncrasy in each new election.” www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

The rise of the AfD, Elon Musk and Donald Trump, Nigel Farage and Reform, and every other Far Right party isn't 'organic' or a popular reaction. It is due to unlimited, non stop support from the Far Right Billionaire Media, and the many idiots who will vote for blatant lies.

“Elon Musk’s cost-cutting team is eliminating jobs at the vehicle safety agency that oversees Tesla and has launched investigations into deadly crashes involving his company’s cars.”

Oh.

Oh….

It's time to tax the rich.

Lord Keynes told us in 1941 how to pay for defence We should follow his advice. youtu.be/D8vt7hXlqZM?... If we need to pay more for defence the last people who should pay for it are those most dependent on the state. It’s the richest who should be covering the cost.

If it looks like a Nazi………

Excellent package from the News Agents gang. 'Ukraine did not invade itself.' Sometimes things put at their simplest are the most effective. More please.

The US President's attempts to extort Ukraine for its natural resources, while abandoning its fate to Russia, is a return to the worst imperial politics of the past bylinetimes.com/2025/02/21/t...

Britons’ big issues remain broadly the same this week - with cost of living maintaining the top spot it has held since the pandemic. But compared with last week, the proportion of Britons selecting “war in Ukraine” as a top 3 issue has almost doubled, from 5% to 11%.

Brexit's impact on UK tourism is stark: fewer visitors, higher costs, and new barriers like ETAs. We're losing ground to Europe.

87% of the UK population hate Donald Trump.

Truth isn’t what it used to be. Facts are under attack. But this isn’t new - it’s a playbook perfected by Big Tobacco and weaponised by the far right. How do you fight back when reality itself is being rewritten? | Guy Chapman @eastangliabylines.co.uk

This is a new level of madness. I don't know how it can be stopped

When comparing US and UK levels of defence spending, bear in mind that the US figures include healthcare schemes for the troops & employees, whereas in the UK, healthcare covered by the NHS is not included in defence spending figures.

Racist says what?

Spain has chosen to be an "open & prosperous" country & is thriving as a result. The attitude towards immigrants is not only welcoming & compassionate but has contributed significantly to Spain becoming "Europe's buzziest economy". An important lesson. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

Employment rates by country of birth: historically, non-EU migrants to UK had relatively low employment rates, mostly reflecting low participation rates amongst women from some countries. No longer the case. [usual caveats on LFS data, but consistent with other sources.]

This is Farage’s moment of reckoning: he can choose British voters – or Putin and Trump

taking black kids away from their parents and putting them on farms seems really familiar to me! what could it be?

The government is busy - but the work is not being reported. From banning toxic pesticides to funding green jobs, here are 20 things that happened last week.

"It is clear that the US can no longer be regarded as a reliable ally for Europeans... "During last year’s presidential race, Trump courted the oil and gas industry and asked its executives to come up with $1 billion for his campaign."

A very clear response from London Fire Commissioner, Andy Rowe to a question at Fire Plenary last week from Emma Best AM about the impact of LTNs on fire brigade attendance times. "We genuinely couldn't find any evidence of LTNs doing anything to our overall attendance times".

Europe should view Trump’s wrecking ball approach to Nato and negotiations with Russia on the Ukraine war as “an opportunity”, not just a threat, President Emmanuel Macron will tell a hastily convened informal summit of European leaders at the Elysée Palace today. 1/

Why the Bank of England base rate should be no more than the rate of inflation www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2025/02... There's no excuse for the Bank of England to continue with interest rates as high as they are.

Starmer’s Ukraine Op-Ed is well worth reading. For someone often criticised for lacking a vision it’s entirely clearly sighted on the future of Ukraine and why it matters and at the same time acknowledging Trump is right to call out lack of European defence spending.

I’ve been trying to report this story for ages but the data is impossible to get as the MoJ does not record how many women are held in prison on solely mental health grounds. Which is a big problem.
