Next Generation Assessment with Sammy Wright - part 2 In January we held our third Next Generation Assessment Conference, hear what @sammywright.bsky.social had to say: vimeo.com/1054148305?s... Find the digital toolkit here: www.edge.co.uk/news-and-eve...

This was nice

If anyone’s in the market for a book about exams, inequality, cultural capital, and kids who tell you to “fuck off, sir”, you could read mine. People seem to like it.

This is no surprise. As I have continuously argued, the price point of private education is not a key consideration for its purchase. Experience, opportunities, and networks are. ‘Children not leaving Edinburgh private schools amid VAT hike’ www.heraldscotland.com/news/2494254...

I cannot get my head round the idea that the US and Russia are negotiating the future of Ukraine in Riyadh with NO UKRAINIANS PRESENT.

🧵An important part of the primary experience is having a lovely time- adults ringfencing the unique state of childhood and ensuring that primary is a glorious place to be little. Playful and joyful are not the antonyms of high standards and aspiration.

This is terrifying. open.substack.com/pub/goodalla...

Fact of the day: Russia invaded Ukraine and is solely responsible for the subsequent war. We ALL know this. Any analogies or explanations or negotiations that fail to recognise this are in bad faith and the product of apologists.

I absolutely loved my first attempt at teaching creative writing this january - so i’m going again! www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/writing-fi...

Another outing for the best thank you card from a student ever. No, Alan, thank YOU.

The news about Ukraine is terrible. Our Ukrainian friends have lived with us for almost three years now, and this I think is their lowest moment. I don’t think we can understate the risk here - that a massive, unprovoked, hellishly violent act of aggression ends up rewarded and legitimised.

Fun times!

Loved doing this. youtu.be/DHttUVpgwRs

One of the interesting things about writing Exam Nation has been people responding to it as an issue of stress on young people. Yes that happens - but that isn’t the big problem. The more important point is disengagement and inequality.

Starting to really gear up for new thing. Daunting but good.

Interesting when people hold up the private education sector as something the state sector should emulate, and one of the messages from the private sector is that GCSEs are bull****

This was a particularly good one… www.churchtimes.co.uk/articles/202...

At #NGA2025 I heard a panel of ind schools talking about doing only Eng and Maths GCSE, with the rest of the curriculum made up of their own bespoke courses. I felt so sad to think what would happen to a state school that did that. That freedom and joy in learning feels so far from my daily life.

One of my best ever teaching experiences was a comparison unit on Sunset Boulevard and Mulholland Drive for A level film. We watched and rewatched both films - but it was Mulholland Drive that got richer and stranger with every viewing. Rest in weirdness David Lynch.

I love it when I look like I’ve fallen asleep mid conversation.

Second lesson in my four week Writing Fiction course complete. It’s so nice teaching a group of people who’ve given up their evenings to do this!
