Hard to overstate the harms of the whitewashed civil rights movement right now, widely taught as essentially passive petitioners of the benevolent state. The movement succeeded only bc it mobilized ppl through a variety of tactics including self-defense & economic warfare *against* the racist state.

on the short list of greatest musicians ever, an absolute foundational artist hard to even know where to start with his best work, but "all of Pet Sounds" is as good a place as any

why is the president the only person testing the limits of his power? everyone should see what they can get away with. what if zookeepers gave helicopters to gorillas? nobody has tried this

Will the news media properly cover the "No Kings" protests on Saturday? Or will they decide that "peaceful" equals "boring"? Back in April, NPR decided that 3 million protesters was a small number. Will an even bigger number shake news outlets out of their stupor? My Stop the Presses newsletter.

Despite the fact that three members of their party have died in office this year already, no sign of respectfully easing out old leaders. Here, will DC pay the price?

Trump is urging Texas Republicans to redistrict even more aggressively than their existing map this year, in advance of 2026. However, as the investment saying goes, pigs get fat, but hogs get slaughtered. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/09/u...

And my long conversation with @andreapitzer.bsky.social on the #BethesdaDeclaration is out too. Standing up to power. degenerateart.beehiiv.com/p/standing-u...

Every major Dem politician needs to realize that, in this environment, they can schedule a "speech to the nation," like Newsom did, and get tons of media coverage. Just do it.

Periodic reminder that every day is STFU Friday Also, sharing the location of cops in the public performance of their jobs is ironclad First Amendment-protected expression If you're concerned something you've said has you on the Government's radar, call your lawyer instead of posting through it

1/ Never ... in my wildest thoughts ... did I expect that one day I'd excitedly post an unlocked link to an op-ed by ... Sarah Huckabee Sanders, but I'm absolutely thrilled to be doing exactly that here. I mean, now that I've caught my breath after reading it. ... www.nytimes.com/2025/06/10/o...

Every day the authoritarianism grows worse - Christopher Rufo calling for the Trump administration to "dispatch unmarked vans to follow key agitators and snatch them from the streets while the media are not looking" christopherrufo.com/p/trump-shou...

In New Jersey, if you are not already affiliated with a political party, you can declare your party affiliation at the polls on Primary Election Day. You simply go to your polling place and request either a Democratic or Republican primary ballot.

In New Jersey, independent voters are free to vote in either primary. They just have to show up and ask for the ballot of their choice. Vote tomorrow!

This took a while to get done, but I've chronicled my day among the protesters in Los Angeles, and the idea that this is anything but a celebration of cultural heritage and a firm, nonviolent demand to protect family, friends and neighbors is totally ridiculous. prospect.org/justice/crie...

Here's the bonkers thing about the Data for Progress poll: It has Mamdani's favorables at 58-15 and Cuomo's at 48-49 (with THIRTY-SIX PERCENT very unfavorable). If the people who hate Cuomo figure out that Zohran is the way to stop him, this could turn into a bloodbath.

If any Democratic leaders are still unsure whether they should stand up to fascism, here is the closing argument for the “yes” side:

This election is effectively the one that determines who will be the next governor. The margin is likely to be no more than 100,000 votes. Never have New Jerseyans been this powerful in setting the direction of their state. Vote tomorrow.

I’ve been away from California 31 years. Never been prouder.

Californians, contact your legislator to demand that Governor Newsom tell the National Guard to stand down. (legal nitpickers, don’t @ me) findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov

Trump is deploying the US Marines on Los Angeles, after deploying 2000 Nat'l Guard. If you are in the US Armed Forces & unsure of how to respond to an illegal order—you are not alone. Call the GI Rights Hotline at 1-877-447-4487 for free & confidential guidance: www.qasimrashid.com/p/trump-is-d...

Great idea. It's easy, and it gets some tension out to tell someone whose job it is to represent you. US Capitol switchboard is 202-224-3121. Your governor, state legislator, and mayor also have the job of protecting your community, keeping the integrity of the National Guard, etc. Call them too!

Just Sayin' www.salon.com/2025/06/09/w...

It does not require a focus group to know that deploying the National Guard in the face of a civilian protest is an escalation and must be stopped. Call on your member of Congress to speak out. US Capitol switchboard: 202-224-3121. Also call your state legislator to block this in your home state.

I just realized I wrote this a little shy of a year ago and boy do I hate being right sometimes!!

I am in downtown Los Angeles right now and it is completely surreal to hear that Trump is sending Marines here. We are listening to mariachi music. People have dogs. There are teenagers here. It is utterly and completely peaceful. Please tell your friends.

THIS THIS AND MORE OF THIS. If you want people to come to your party, throw a better party. Immigrants are awesome.

🧵 Several people have raised questions about what I meant by "deservedly so" when referring to the decline of institutional trust. It's a fair question, so I want to explain that, because it sits at the heart of my work on how democracies collapse when their epistemic foundations rot.

The courage it took to make this stand is amazing. These people are defending the core of U.S. (and global) science, at considerable risk to their own livelihoods.

It is totally @samwang.bsky.social ’s line but happy to get half the credit

🚨BREAKING: 300+ NIH employees call out the harm of censorship & politicized science in scathing email to Bhattacharya, demanding an end to political interference, a lift on funding freezes, & rehiring of fired staff whose work saves lives. This is historic - insiders are blowing the whistle. 🧵(1/5)
