Books designed to be read only by human eyes are different from books designed to be read by machines, which is why Google will tell you that the phrase “shake my booty” can be found in an 1863 English translation of Don Quixote.

The 18th and early 20th century period celebrated romance, and especially St Valentine's Day...

This is terrifying and sounds suspiciously like rewriting history... www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-f...

Absolutely inspirational.

Digital book burning

What I will say is that if you’re concerned by this news as a member, as a fan of any of EH’s properties, or simply as someone who likes to walk around ruins, country houses and prehistoric sites, please write to English Heritage to say so. Your voice matters the most.

Art at Canary Wharf's Winter Lights Festival this evening. Reminds me of the old RKO ident.

Greed, every time. Greed. Petition signed and will up my cinema going in protest.

A wet Sunday. What better project than taking the problem lantern to bits...

This is utterly disgraceful. As if what is happening to the poor people in LA isn't terrible enough.

This.

With a complex 24 hours ahead, wishing everyone a Happy New Year and a great 2025. Mine will be filled with rotting trunks, strange magic lantern slides and...well, who knows what...

Absolutely adoring The Dead of Winter R4 by Sarah Clegg; ordered the book for reading at Old Christmas www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/brand...

An archival post on the historic cribs of the Infant Jesus. hauntedohiobooks.com/news/lay-dow...

Bargains agogo at my local Asda

It has just taken me over an hour to respond to this, but it needs responses. Artists - musicians - writers - all creative people - respond to this, please....

Down with this kind of thing.

Yeah...

Well deserved indeed!

What a treat Conclave is - equal parts thrilling, pensive and camp. Fiennes is a shoe-in for Best Actor; Rossellini Best Supporting Actress. Best Supporting Actor more difficult to call but almost certainly from this film.

The mysterious, crumbling Murs a Peche at Montreuil, Paris.

An angel conducts the heavenly host.

Takes me ten minutes to open the door of the Mini.

An extraordinary, surreal production of the already surreal Tales of Hoffmann at @royaloperahouse.bsky.social. Wonderful cast but Olga Pudova as Olympia particularly stands out.

Gutted to discover that my favourite restored lost garden, #Dewstow in Wales, is now closed permanently. After being re-dug from underneath a pile of Motorway spoil, it's particularly upsetting to lose it again. Praying it will be maintained and opened at least occasionally.

Wonderful performances from Bryn Terfel, Natalya Romaniw - and the irrepressible Aled Hall in #Tosca this evening at Royal Opera House. An excellent production of an excellent opera...

Another of the dragons at #Waddesdon this Christmas, altogether scarier...

One of the dragons at #Waddesdon this Christmas

A good evening for a candlelit #magiclantern show...
