Gideonā€™s been sick this week so Iā€™ve been attendant to his every sigh, whimper, and bowel movement. Gigi has been rather starved of attention but certainly has been sensible about it and hasnā€™t taken any unreasonable actions like velcroing himself to my side every moment and screaming if I move.

Vera Brittain, who lost her fiancƩ, beloved brother, and others in WWI, composed this shortly afterward:

Several good things are happening according r/fednews so I am going to drop them here. If federal workers are fighting back, how much more us? A thread/

Years ago, after the Cambridge Analytica scandal, I interviewed a former fb employee, and I remember her continually emphasizing that these tech bros weren't evil geniuses, but were, in fact, dangerous because they were utterly clueless, totally reckless, and had too much power.

I am coming in late to this but y'all. If you have material that you use regularly that you don't currently have a digital copy of ... MAKE A DIGITAL COPY OF IT. Make two! Then save them somewhere that isn't your university computer or university cloud account (like an external hard drive)

Happy chewsday innit from Studio Ghibli Soot Sprite the Cat who is contemplating the nature of existence and where freeze dried chicken treats come from (heaven, probably)

ā€œThis is nice behaviour, that I write to you again and again, and you pay no attention to me.ā€ This almost 4,000-year-old Babylonian letter in clay is proof that we have been finding ways to say ā€œper my last emailā€ for some time

I am hugely grateful to these well-informed fantasy fans for taking the time to write these letters rebuking The Guardian for that asinine 'romantasy' opinion piece. www.theguardian.com/books/2025/f...

Since JD Vance just converted to Catholicism 5 minutes ago, he might not know this: the Pope authoring a letter where he goes out of his way to correct you, specifically, is considered "bad" in the Catholic tradition

Apparently itā€™s 關聖åøå›é£›ę˜‡ļ¼Œthe anniversary of when Holy Emperor Guan flew to the skies and became a god. The most likely explanation for the temple procession I stumbled upon today and had an absolute blast spectating

Next week for LGBTQ+ History Month, a workshop on writing LGBTQ+ theatre. For those curious about the history of LGBTQ+ theatre and those hoping to write LGBTQ+ stories, an introduction to both! Tuesday 11th February at 7pm www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/lgbtq-thea...

It will be a shame if this is the end of Dragon Age, but that does mean that nobody can dissuade me from my most bonkers fan theory. #seraisandruiltruther

What Ubuweb said.

Call me paranoid but archaeologists should be saving research data that might be held on relevant servers too, very sorry and frightened for US colleagues at this point but that is something we could/should be doing.

Imbolc Blessings Everyone! Welcome back some light, look for the start of Spring. Five years ago we were celebrating in Carnac and I got to meet the Geant de Manio, a 6.5m, benign collossus in the Breton forest. It's a good day for making megalithic plans for 2025. šŸŗšŸ•Æļø #StandingStoneSunday #Imbolc

Just sealed some idiot within my crystal

Hey. Headbutts you.

Buy the vinyl when you get the chance. Go to the gig on your own. Do the stretching/yoga before it starts to hurt.

do helpful things for people you don't know and don't expect any public recognition for it

Don't do anything that you will feel embarrassed or ashamed to tell a doctor about one day.

And my third and final thing is: donā€™t say ā€œI canā€™t do thatā€. Say ā€œIā€™ll see if I can figure that outā€. Then try to figure it out. Ask for help, but go as far as you can on your own two feet. The journey is worthwhile. Donā€™t give up.

Get exercise, as consistently as possible, and most importantly, stretch (even if you donā€™t do the other parts of exercising). Take breaks, including vacations. Read books for fun (you still learn a lot from even silly novels!). Have hobbies. Put money in savings if you can, itā€™s reassuring to have.

Also: try to wake up early and do something before work, and something after work too. If you sandwich the part of your day you canā€™t stand (work) with elements you enjoy (writing, TV shows, gym, class, dates, sport, music, etc) you feel less like work is all you do. Iā€™m less dead inside now! (Ish)

Read as much as possible. Not just whatā€™s popular - read things you might have thought out of your depth, like academic texts. Read Ancient Greek poems and plays. Read Beowulf. Do what you can to remove the dust of the ancient past and remind yourself that people have always been people like you.

The worst thing to ever happen to you in your life? It'll pass. Wait it out. Sometimes it passes because life carries you along to other things. Sometimes it passes because you get used to bearing the burden of it. But that vivid unbearableness? It passes. Get someone to hold you a bit, if you can.

Iā€™ve been on holiday a single day and my cat has made it an absolute mission to seek out my work laptop in an attempt to destroy it.

These were the weeks in 1649 when John Milton was writing ā€œThe Tenure of Kings and Magistratesā€, pointing out that many people love a tyrant because they love ā€œnot freedom, but license, which never hath more scope, or more indulgence than under tyrantsā€ #milton

the banning of tiktok is another painful reminder to buy physical copies of your media. i have dozens of dvds of an ai voice reading reddit comments over unrelated minecraft footage.
