Been in a reading funk…this however broke that. “The First Year” by #MattGoodfellow is every bit as wonderful as I hoped it would be. It truly captures the anxieties and challenges of going to secondary and feels entirely true. Nate and his “square” are fantastic. We all need someone to know us!

8 years ago we stopped writing comments in pupils' books and moved to whole class feedback. Teacher workload and pupil outcomes improved dramatically as a result. We have never looked back. Very pleased to see our case study in @katejonesteach.bsky.social excellent new book.

For anyone who's read VARJAK PAW and wants to know how it was written - or anyone interested in the #writing process - here's a free resource I made for the British Library, sharing pages from 7 different drafts. You can have a lot of fun showing this to a class! www.sfsaid.com/2024/06/the-...

One of the things that keeps me going back to Twitter is that I get fairly regular DMs on there asking me for advice about reading. Just to be clear: I am more than happy for people to DM on here for the same reason. Please repost this if you think this info might be useful to someone.

Another cracker from @katejonesteach.bsky.social! It looks superb. Really looking forward to this one 😊

A collection of child led video tutorials for learning CPR. My pupils were thrilled to help launch the Save a Life for Scotland campain back in 2015. wakelet.com/wake/cce8d6a...

The most important annual report about children's publishing. A must-read for all English teachers #ReflectingRealities

What's your "why"? Do you have it front and centre, somewhere you can see it every day, so it becomes your North Star? Here's my "why". Now we're on the move, I've had to take a photo of it. Normally it stands on my desk so I can read it and stay true to it every day. https://buff.ly/3tDhO8D

Very noble of Jeremy Clarkson to support the farmers protest. Nothing to do with having spent £4.25m on a farm to avoid paying inheritance tax.

Am I going to get more traction on here or on threads? So far threads wins by a mile. Is that because I like words and pictures together so I always post pictures? Is that less good for bluesky? Here’s one of them now that illustrates how I’m feeling. (From ‘The Taming of the Cat’.) #blueskynerves

Great story about a heroine librarian, attacked by book-banning parents she thought were friends. “The crazy thing about this case is they get to wave the freedom of speech flag in the lawsuit, but what started all this is they want to ban books,” said Jones’s lawyer www.nytimes.com/2024/09/03/b...
