Rubio terminated 5800 USAID contracts – more than 90% of its foreign aid programs – in defiance of the courts. Here’s a list of just some of the lifesaving awards that were terminated. Nearly all were Congressionally mandated. They’ve saved millions of lives. 🧵

People laughed a few days ago when @jamellebouie.net said we might not have flu shots next year, but:

Law students, now's your chance to act on @leahlitman.bsky.social's wise words about the value state supreme court clerkships. Hear the essentials, directly from the justices! Is there a question you'd like them to answer? DM me and I'll try to work in it. March 17, 3-4pm EST (virtual)

Hey, law students! @leahlitman.bsky.social says: State supreme court clerkships offer real benefits over other clerkships. Those courts often pick what cases they hear so you get to help find cool legal issues that are of interest to judges & of public importance as well. (Leah is always right)

A friend of mine has a daughter with Down syndrome, and thanks to these programs she recently made the transition from high school and living at home to an internship at a major pharmaceutical company and an apartment of her own. But the techbros think that's all "waste"

Somehow I got on the NYT mailing list for daily cooking tips. At first I was annoyed because (a) I don't cook much and (b) it seems so trivial given all this <waves hands>. Now I find comfort in fact that someone really does care enough about rice to write a 500 word article about how to cook it.

Congressional Democrats say Congress should have spending authority and other powers laid out in Art. 1 of the Constitution. Congressional Republicans say this is a red line, insisting that budgets and other bills are merely suggestions, and the White House must be able to break laws when it wants.

Do you work on topics related to employment and labor relations? Submit an individual paper or panel to LERA@ASSA 2026! LERA will be sponsoring a number of sessions, and they usually are well-attended. Submission deadline 3/15. #EconSky #EconConf

Really gut wrenching story about the Social Services Block Grant program being targeted, and the Meals on Wheels program it supports in Abilene, Texas. www.reporternews.com/story/news/2...

There are so many reasons university endowments can't make up for the dramatic cuts the Trump administration has planned for science. Here are a few. Thanks to @donmoyn.bsky.social for the platform.

I hope all these university freezes are buying time to regroup and figure out how to keep fulfilling our mission in a (possibly permanent) new environment. I fear we’re delusional and treating this as a temporary shock like a recession that we just need to ride out until things get back to normal.

It's a very sad day. Just notified that @iza.org is closing its doors as of 31 December 2025. At a time when labor is under attack and technological change moves at an ever-faster pace, I can't help but think that this is a short-sighted decision. My heart goes out to those folks who work there.

Devastating news that @iza.org is effectively closing down 😔 It was (or at the moment, is) a wonderful institute and the network was tremendously helpful in dissaminating work in labour economics. IZA will sorely be missed 😢 So sorry for all IZA employees!

Sonia Citron is ON ONE

I am sad to share that all Retirement & Disability Research centers have been ordered to stop work. My fellowship will no longer exist, and the work of so many talented researchers and dedicated staff will be cut short. www.ssa.gov/news/press/r...

Refugees in the US *give money* to US taxpayers. From 2005–2019, refugees paid $123.8 billion more in taxes than they received in expenditures: aspe.hhs.gov/reports/fisc... That's federal, state, and local combined. Everything. Now we have obliterated that low-cost, high-return investment—>

Usually when states go to court alleging federal coercion in violation of the 10th Amendment there is not a literal video of the President doing it.

So the President not only fired the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. He also fired the top JAGs at the Army, Navy and Air Force. Those are the lead people who determine what is a legal order and what is not. So if you're planning to do things that are illegal they're the most obvious obstacle.

For 38 years, PRAMS has collected critical data on maternal-child health with the goal to reduce infant morbidity and mortality. CDC has officially halted the 2024 PRAMS data collection for the participating 46 states and the future is uncertain.

I'll remember this email my entire life.

Die Linke, FDP and BSW all gaining is the worst kind of poll for Merz. From our forecast, when 4 parties make it into the Bundestag he gets a choice of coalition partner. When 5 qualify, he's likely to be forced to work with the SPD. When six qualify, he'll probably need a throuple.

Clever test of AI reasoning ability adds the option "none of these" to the common MMLU benchmark, forcing the AI to consider options rather than just picking the best The result is a big drop in accuracy for most models, though Reasoners (o3 & DeepSeek) hold up much better arxiv.org/pdf/2502.12896

there's been a sharp acceleration in Obsidian community plugin submissions, in part due to the rise of AI coding tools it's a "good problem to have" but it's overwhelming our review process — our human reviewers can't keep up what should we do?

It's time to start a thread on higher ed budget cuts announced due to actual and potential cuts to federal funding. Northwestern is placing additional scrutiny on all spending and trying to cut non-personnel spending by 10% this year.

Remarkable thread offering guidance to current and prospective NSF grantees about how to navigate the times ahead — from an NSF program officer who was fired in yesterday's DOGE purge (!)

I can confirm this is an awesome gig during grad school - I loved being the AERE social media manager. It's a nice way to meet AERE leadership, read (abstracts) of JAERE papers, attend the annual conference, etc. Current students - feel free to reach out w/ questions if interested! #EconSky 📈📉

After the federal layoffs No staff to collect admission! So the JFK Museum is free Doubt this is a money-saver But free museum 👍🏼

Well, this took off! Lots of replies focus on whether the jobs report will be honestly reported. A mini-thread on that. 1/

I guess one way to get around FOIA is to fire everyone who handles the FOIA requests 🙃
