And rightly so. I kind of wonder if the costume designer was thinking “let’s give the audience a visual metaphor” which I guess? Or whether it was more of a leather wear = classic sign of character hardening. I guess it could be either or both. To me it was weird from a character POV.

I really loved The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw. Fantastic novella. A slightly romantic horror fairytale with an intimate POV. The heroine is a mermaid but only kind of? Hard to describe.
