I just moderated my first town meeting; a road discontinuance, decided by the citizens of Colchester, CT. Fun to try this out supported by our town clerk and first selectman. Transferable skills from academic governance! One day I might be ready to moderate the town budget meeting. . .

ICYMI: Today, the ACLU Foundation of CT filed a class-action lawsuit to block the Trump administration from revoking international students’ visa status across the state. Read this exclusive piece by @joshuaeaton.bsky.social and Natasha Sokoloff: www.ctinsider.com/news/educati...

Any long day at work transforms when I get home to this.

Accreditation changes are coming. Ironic that this quiet corner that underpins institutional quality could be in the political crosshairs. #AcademicSky

If you think this can’t happen, remember that of the 125,000 Japanese Americans who were interned during WWII for years without charge or trial, two-thirds were U.S. citizens. Including me.

The @heardislandgov.bsky.social account is making me smile this morning. But it does leave me wondering, what kind of penguin was Pingu?

So good. 🤡 @brendanvduke.bsky.social

Tufts President: our student Rümeysa Öztürk is a good person who did nothing wrong. These actions have terrified our international students, faculty, and staff. Leading the way on how to make a clear defense. #AcademicSky

Yep

We are living in this weird altered reality where we seem to have stepped over to the other side of the looking glass. On the day to day in HE, no one even knows how things will shake out. Glad some are able to keep leaving federal roles to highlight the madness. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

NEW: The Trump administration pulled funding for research to protect pregnant women from domestic violence, citing it as a “DEI” initiative.

But the Scottish model hasn’t fared much better. It seems that the reality that HE *is* expensive and the related fact that it brings back excellent returns isn’t being recognized by gov’t.

I'm so excited!

You may not recognize it at first, but life in this country will never be the same if people stop coming from abroad because they are not guaranteed protection under the law. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/16/u...

The Trump regime will arrest you in the middle of the night because you spoke your mind. And federal agents in plain clothes who refuse to identify themselves will be the ones to do it. If you think I'm being hyperbolic, watch this clip.

on the other hand this also tells us these people are afraid of posters and scare easy

I have been so relieved in the last few days that I got my act together and became a US citizen. Hopefully these stories are going to increase empathy for all immigrants, regardless of legal status.

Right now there is clear, overwhelming opposition to Mahmoud Khalil’s abduction across the moderate, liberal, progressive & left spectrum. This kind of loud unity is what authoritarians are afraid of. To keep it up we need every institution & public leader to join the chorus.

The state has been captured and is being stripped for parts, folks. www.cnn.com/2025/02/27/b...

DOGE recommends cuts to the FAA. Hundreds of workers get fired, including those tasked with producing air traffic navigation maps. Now Starlink is reportedly in line to take over a $2 billion contract to upgrade the nation's air traffic control systems. See how this works?

Here's a banner you can hang on your door to signal that your office is an inclusive space. A CUNY faculty member worked with a designer to make this to support students, but it could work in many settings! Downloadable link in comments. #AcademicSky #diversity #DEI

A lot of Americans don't actually care much about policy, because they don't trust government to solve their problems. Instead, they just want someone to blame when they're struggling. And the GOP gives them scapegoats in spades.

This is what oligarchy looks like.

With Handmaids Tale people focus on the shock of the mass rapes in the book and the show. But how the regime came to be in power in that book keeps me awake at night because it is playing out in very intricate detail in our real lives right now.

Our University Senate just passed block transfer for gen ed, for (select) associate degrees. It took tons of work get to this point, but in typical Senate fashion, it was almost unnoticed in an omnibus motion that included updates on course caps for gen ed courses.

We say that people don't notice constitutional regime collapse because it comes on too slowly but I'm not sure how much faster it could be happening; we are literally at concentration camps on day 9.

Education department statement, for those who asked for more info (my colleagues are doing more reporting on some of this): “The funding pause directed by the January 27, 2025 OMB memorandum only applies to discretionary grants at the Department of Education." 1/3

Just a heads up. I can only speak to education but Title IV funds, which include the Pell Grant, are currently excluded from the "freeze." This is still incredibly catastrophic (and illegal? though lol what are laws?). Just don't take this list as the final word, it's an evolving situation.

Keeping an eye on accreditation-related news on one hand, while also deep into planning a 2026 institutional reaccreditation. Not sure quality assurance is the foremost thought of the incoming federal administration.
