Spring morning.

Harvard's Stefanie Stancheva has won the 2025 John Bates Clark Medal, given to an economist under 40 "judged to have made the most significant contribution to economic thought and knowledge." www.aeaweb.org/about-aea/ho...

Spring, for real, finally.

So good to see that Kilmar is alive. Let's bring him and the others home.

New preprint finding that eliminating US global health funding over the next fifteen years would cause: - 15.2m deaths from AIDS - 2.2m deaths from TB - 7.9 additional child deaths

So the US was supposed to report its greenhouse gas emissions to the UNFCCC yesterday. For the first time since 1997, it didn't. This follows last week's revelation that Trump's EPA is stopping collection of GHG emission from 40 of 41 sectors www.propublica.org/article/trum...

Mohsen Mahdawi of White River Junction, Vermont was illegally detained by ICE during what was supposed to be the final step in his citizenship process. Mr. Mahdawi, a legal resident of the US, must be afforded due process under the law and immediately released from detention.

Spring on Northwest Hill.

Exiling people beyond the protection of US law without due process is not only unconstitutional, it's a rejection of the entire American revolutionary project. Sending people "beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences" is one of the grievances enumerated in the Declaration of Independence.

Over 800 international students have been purged from the United States so far Not because they broke any law But because individuals in the US Administration arbitrarily and retroactively disapprove of their opinions. Continuously updated tracker from @insidehighered.com —>

“Skirt”

Brief from the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and more than 80 universities says arrests and deportations of student protesters create a “climate of fear” at universities across the country. This is a big deal—the first time universities have weighed in. knightcolumbia.org/documents/eh...

Morning at Middlebury.

More and more right-wing politicians cynically use Jews as scapegoats to justify hateful policies against other groups, such as Muslims, immigrants, or academic institutions. It's an old trope to blame Jews for unpopular policies and to pit minorities against each other. Please don't fall for it.

PSA for any other time-constrained introverts out there: if you're still interested in being involved in election work, check out Vote Forward's campaigns. This was my second election writing letters for them, and it's been a great experience (go WI!)

Hundreds of international students have just received an email telling them their visas have been revoked. The ‘justification’ is campus activism or social media posts. timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/us/hun...

I'm Jewish, named after my uncle who was executed by the Nazis in a forced labor camp in Poland. My gradfather died in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Trump's use of antisemitism as a smokescreen to underminine free speech and destroy academic research is reprehensible. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/24/p...

Universities need to declare that they cannot function if their personnel can be detained--arrested, deported etc-- for speech.

NEW! The Trump administration appears to have sent a married father with NO CRIMINAL RECORD in any country to rot in a prison in El Salvador because of a PAPERWORK ERROR. This man doesn’t even have tattoos! But his paperwork has two different peoples’ ID numbers listed and the wrong last name!

ICE has arrested Iranian national Alireza Doroudi, a doctoral candidate studying mechanical engineering at the University of Alabama. He was arrested at home at 5 a.m. Tuesday. As with some of the others who've been disappeared, unclear why he was detained. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

One thing that most people are missing in the group text scandal: The Trump officials don’t appear clear on what *exactly* Trump approved, which is a huge problem in using military force. Stephen Miller says “as I heard it … green light.” 😱😬 www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/six-short-...

" ‘No Other Land’ Co-Director Hamdan Ballal Beaten and Attacked, Says Yuval Abraham: ‘No Sign of Him Since’ He posted 'They beat him and he has injuries in his head and stomach, bleeding. Soldiers invaded the ambulance he called, and took him.' " variety.com/2025/film/ne...

!! A Columbia U junior, a legal permanent resident since age 7 from South Korea, has sued after ICE tried to arrest and deport her." Trump Admin: her presence in the US "hinders the administration’s foreign policy agenda of halting the spread of antisemitism." www.nytimes.com/2025/03/24/n...

Ok, fellow faculty and university leaders. How are we going to make sure that the next few years of PhD grads have jobs that keep them in their fields until our country regains sense about research funding? We have to get creative.

There's honestly some crazy crap going on out there.

Seeking advice on education data - need not be US. I have a great undergrad student who wants to write a thesis on a topic intersecting technology + education - was interested in whether AI improves / hurts learning but will iterate to adjacent topics based on data availability. Help? #EconSky

Frigid but stunning morning.

In addition to being morally wrong this is also just plain old wrong as shown by research by @kevinshih.bsky.social www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

"Last week, Vance said foreign students at elite U.S. universities are 'not just bad for national security,' but also 'bad for the American dream, for American kids who want to go to a nice university but can’t because their spot was taken by a foreign student.'" www.politico.com/news/2025/03...

Spring.

The administration is flagrantly violating Article I and Article III of the constitution on an hourly basis now. Whatever you want to call the system of government that represents, it's neither "democracy" nor a "constitutional republic."

AERA has just learned that all restricted-use NCES data licenses will be cancelled, possibly as early as March 20. We urgently request that all AERA members and others in the research community with restricted-use licenses take these two actions: www.aera.net/Research-Pol...

I understand that these are dark times that call for courage. But keep in mind I am just a baby

Which is more than we spend in total over 10 years on Pell grants to send low income students to college.

Celebrating some trans joy today as my online friend @quincemountain.bsky.social has passed the halfway point in the Iditarod! His dog team is led by nearly 12yo badass Pepé 👑 (howling in the pic). Wishing Q and team a smoother trail and positive vibes 🏳️‍⚧️🐕🛷❄️ #UglyDogs Who runs the world? Pepé

The NASA office of technology, policy and strategy as well as the office of the chief scientist are both being shut down, and its overall science budget may be slashed by as much as 50%.
