This was the thing that bugged me about Almanac's Hortman tribute almost entirely interviewing Democrats, including Klobuchar, who talked about "turning down the temperature". I'd be a lot more impressed if I'd seen any Republicans calling for ending the violence.

The cover of Harvard Magazine’s July/August issue:

Call your senator and tell them to oppose the AI regulations moratorium. This language would ban states from enforcing any AI rules for a decade.

The Democrats’ biggest brand challenge is that voters don’t think the believe in anything The Democrats’ biggest operational challenge is a leadership that consistently proves those skeptical voters correct

In the span of two weeks, Colindres went from celebrating his graduation to being detained by ICE to then being deported to a country where he has not lived since he was 8 years old.

Two pertinent graphs from me tonight... First, U.S. support for bombing Iran is very low — much lower than support was at the time for the American military attacking Afghanistan, Iraq, and ISIS. Link: www.gelliottmorris.com/p/polls-amer...

I said I'd try to come up with something that wasn't political doom today, so here goes, war or no. We have a neighborhood Godzilla that wears charming outfits, so when they change, I occasionally take paparazzi photos. Currently, he is wearing a fetching frock and straw hat.

I think one of the problems I run into, as an SF/cyberpunk fan, is that a lot of the cool stuff is premised on *owning* your tools in a way that's kind of no longer possible. *Your* AI assistant, *your* gargoyle rig.

There are a LOT of vets who share his views (see my last repost where the former Ranger ambushed "heterofest"). I'm one of them. MAGA is not what I enlisted for. I enlisted for the ideals that ALL are created equal, and the Poem of The New Colossus. Miller can take a long walk, off a short pier

Something I’d note is that while there is criminal immunity for “official acts” for the president, no such immunity exists for the deputy chief of staff.

U.S. cell service lags behind the rest of the world -- most of Africa has better cellular data. As a result, most practical wireless internet in the U.S. relies on WiFi. But the Republican budget bill threatens to change that, taking spectrum away from WiFi and giving it to AT&T and Musk instead.

I've seen calls for content that isn't outrage, but I'm in Minnesota. This week, I've been reading an endless series of personal tributes to the most consequential speaker of the house in state history from my many friends who are grief stricken, many of whom were also targets. Maybe next week.

For being a Democrat. They are targeting Democrats.

With all these Feds in masks, MAGA has to be concerned. Remember during Covid they all thought it was unhealthy and you rebreathe diseases! Make Agents Healthy Again!

When it’s gone, it’s gone. We’ll never get it back. We don’t need this money this way. We can’t undo the environmental damage that will follow. This is a bad idea.

Please, please, please get your children (boys, girls, and non-binary) the HPV vaccine before it goes away or gets harder to get.

This is why using it instead of a search engine or fricken ctrl/f seems so ridiculous.

A system already exists to over-confidently state incorrect facts to women, thanks, we don’t need another one

people have said you should block vance because he's looking for engagement to share on twitter. the corollary there is that engaging with him is extremely unsafe. He wants to put you on blast and see if he can get his nazi followers to send you death threats. 1

This is a vital message: one of the larger reasons BlueSky is refreshingly free of alt-right shitlords is because in the early days we made a gentleperson’s agreement to starve these fuckos out and it worked. No likes, no quotes, no engagement. They got bored and left. Please keep the Old Ways.

Good question, and one that a lot of people have. If you, like Gail, want to be sure Cuomo loses, you need to do a few things: 1. Don't rank Cuomo. 2. DO rank Mamdani and Lander. 3. Rank Mamdani, Lander, and whoever else you rank in order of your own preference. That's it. That's all the rules.

Breaking: The Trevor Project received a stop-work order last night on its contract with the national 988 suicide prevention hotline. The Trump administration is eliminating the option for LGBTQ callers to the hotline to press 3 and connect with someone who specializes in LGBTQ mental health.

As a Minneapolis resident, the Hortman assassination is giving me a lot of George Floyd flashbacks. Horrible violence, weekend of terror, worldwide attention, and an outpouring of right-wing disinformation about my community. Fun! Let's not do this again!

I wasn't expecting a book recommendation from this press conference, but it sounds like it's worth finding a copy of Getting To Yes.

It's been obvious that he's slipping, but woof, it's easy to not realize quite how badly until you contrast it with something like this.

Yeah you’ve got hochul uploading an official nygov social video calling lander’s arrest, and I’m quoting here, “bullshit.” They think the feds have overreached and are vulnerable.

Having a bit of a hard time with the concept that if a guy in a police uniform who has a police vehicle shows up I should lock the doors and call 911, but if a guy in a ski mask with an hGH gut appears to be kidnapping my neighbor, I shouldn’t ask who he is if I don’t want federal charges.

Not an original point but worth saying again - there is not a single element in this picture that identifies any of these folks as law enforcement agents. No badges, no uniforms, no vests. Out of context it just looks like a bunch of random guys are kidnapping a mayoral candidate.

You know it's been wet when you hear and indistinct hissing noise outside and are like "Surely they're not WATERING?! It's been raining for weeks! There was an absolute downpour yesterday!" and then realize it probably something more like a street sweeper.

Idea: the key Writing: building the house it unlocks.

🚨 There’s a lot of horrific news out of Washington right now—but you might have missed this: Senate Republicans just introduced a plan to sell off 120 million acres of our public lands. Let me break down what’s in the bill and why it’s a full-scale land grab. 🧵

Please read and share this statement from Sophie and Colin Hortman, children of Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark. (via WCCO reporter Caroline Cummings on X)

This is tangential but a thing I've learned as a person who is related to Fox-brained Republicans: they really think they can steamroll and are ready for ~ arguments ~ but they truly do not know what to do with "Well, that's an awful thing to say and you should be ashamed, anyway, how's the pie"

I wrote about how the 2020 protests hurt Trump politically. I also wrote about how counternarratives about left-wing violence are just spin — and wildly at odds with the reality of extremist violence. Gift link: wapo.st/3SOEv6e
