Every time we are "surprised" by an ancient civilization's advanced prowess doing X or Y, we should think about the era of knowledge destruction in which we currently live and meditate upon how many times in history we must have been set back, defunded, erased, sabotaged, and coopted.

Reading @shawnmicallef.bsky.social here and thinking about my 17 years in public consultation meetings. A constant concern: too much traffic and speed, yet the obvious solutions (denser city, bigger/better public realm) often left off the table. www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...

Looks like I will be on 60 Minutes on Sunday. That is me at the end of the clip.👀 www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1ef...

35 House Democrats joined GOP to vote to kill California's clean-cars rule. 29 are corporatist @newdems.bsky.social This includes 3 members of the @progressivecaucus.bsky.social, all of whom are also New Dems: @repstevenhorsford.bsky.social @repdarrensoto.bsky.social @thanedar.house.gov

Holy shit. I knew this @nytimes.com editorial would be bad, but it's so much worse than I could have imagined. I mean, it is indistinguishable from a parody of reactionary centrism. This is every center-left pathology, laid out for your examination.

Helen Julia Minors and my new edited collection on Choreomusicology for Routledge comes out next week and it is really lovely! Use discount code 25ESA2 for 20% off www.routledge.com/Choreomusico...

Socialism is what they called public power.  Socialism is what they called social security.    Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations.   Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people. —Harry Truman, 1952

“This is taxpayer-funded, state-sponsored religious indoctrination. You’ve just got to call it what it is.”

Harvard Law professor Michael Klarman gave an inspiring lecture about the need for lawyers to protect democracy. I was honored that he noted the attacks and threats aimed at me. His words serve to steel my spine and make me more committed than ever to fighting for democracy. Thank you professor.🙏

GENOCIDE BAD is a NYT and USA Today Bestseller!!! In 40 years of publishing, indie press @interlinkbooks.bsky.social, the only Palestinian-owned press in the US, has faced severe censorship and hate. I am so honored to have worked with them on this book!

This one by @sgj.bsky.social is aimed at my list of best reads of 2025. Snap it up.

Look what arrived today. (Actual release date: Sept 16)

The threat of prosecution by Trump's goons is absolutely reshaping US media right now, from popular magazines and newspapers to academic journals. Editors, on the advice of their legal counsel, are giving inches here and there––and it's adding up. Fascism depends upon this fear.

Advice that applies to both bodybuilding and art history: part one. Eat protein forward meals. They help to build muscle and provide slow release energy needed for long days in the museum.

I am *elated* to share the deal announcement for my first fiction sale! My curse is broken! 🎉 I couldn’t be happier for @ericscottryon.bsky.social ! This beautiful book is going to have you all shedding tears, I promise!

here it is! on why academia hates pregnancy. huge thanks to all my sources: www.chronicle.com/article/what...

This was a whimsical, charming story that felt Ike a cross between a fairy tale and a frontier story, set in Alaska in the 1920s. Beautiful language and sparkling images. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Stop coddling this administration! Call a lie a lie! He's the president, not a toddler! Journalists need to start acting like actual journalists, not daycare workers! Stop treating the president like a sniveling child with hurt feelings. 😭

Public servants, including and especially those in leadership (including those in the executive branch), should receive no more than 1 week of paid vacation. Golf and dine on your own fucking dime. (That could almost be a rap song.)

That there were hundreds of articles speculating on Joe Biden's cognitive state, but not one mainstream media publication has written an article discussing Donald Trump's obvious cognitive decline and mental instability, says all you need to know about the American news media.

Before the White House Correspondents Association dinner recedes too far into the past, I want to do a quick thread about something that happened there, which I think is extremely significant -- and is an extremely ill omen for the future of journalism.

We saw the storm brewing a mile away.

Dear god let this man cook.

If you wonder why men *obsessed* with the United States having more children are kidnapping children and sending them to other countries, those children were the incorrect color.

No, @slotkin.senate.gov — Dems shouldn’t stop using the term “oligarchy”. They should make it a household term. And they should be wary of anyone telling them otherwise. People know what it means. And if they don’t, tell them. That’s what leaders do.

Organisers of the London marathon show more leadership than the government. And should be applauded for doing so. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/athlet...

This is why democrats lose. “Vote for us because we sold our souls to the good billionaires while the other guys sold their souls to the bad billionaires.”

There are at least three problems with this nonsense from Slotkin: 1. As was also the case when Brian Schatz did the same thing, the "stop using weird words" thing is a distraction from actual serious issues.

Not only does this entire article send shivers up my spine, but I learned this morning that Clay was also fired from his job after this article came out. slate.com/news-and-pol...

"the fantasy that returning to what brought us to this hell will get us out of it is dangerously delusional, and it remains rampant in the Democratic Party today." ericreinhart.substack.com/p/resistance...

So confused by this “crisis of masculinity” bullshit. Is the crisis because we can cry now? Like, I can bench the same when I love all my queer friends and my calloused hands are still manly when I’m reading a book by a woman. “Manliness” is bullshit. Be you. Be good. Love hard. Forget the rest.

Shoutout to Daniel Bice of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, who’s been on the Judge Dugan story all week. You can catch up on his coverage here www.jsonline.com/staff/264800...

Many voters view the Democratic Party as weak, and elite centrists want that to mean "too feminine" because they gender strength as masculine. But people view the party as weak because it so rarely fights for the values it claims to hold.

I read it…

NOT A DRAG QUEEN

A judge in Milwaukee looked at a warrant presented by ICE agents, said “that is not a valid warrant so you will not be entering my courtroom,” and was arrested by the FBI. If you’re wondering how quickly this administration tipped into full-blown fascism, today is day 95.

I hate comparing things to burning the library of Alexandria but this NEH sculpture garden thing is like bulldozing the library of Alexandria to build a Bass Pro Shops.

The right is burning books, erasing trans people, and criminalizing dissent, and the pundits who spent years laundering their ideology want to pretend they had no role in it. But their reckoning is due. www.theindex.media/the-pundit-c...
