Holy shit. I knew this @nytimes.com editorial would be bad, but it's so much worse than I could have imagined. I mean, it is indistinguishable from a parody of reactionary centrism. This is every center-left pathology, laid out for your examination.

With their complicity in every crime against humanity that lead us here -- from invading Iraq to erasing trans and Palestinian identity -- it seems unfair to expect the NYToast to do much more than publish another symposium with well manicured cryptofascists, or, barring that, Curtis Yarvin.
Really do recommend giving this by @chancephillips.bsky.social a read @volts.wtf, it's real real bad what they're letting Douthat do on his little podcast
serious ?: i got in an argument with my SIL about this very type of thing. I said, the NYTimes used to be center left, but now, bcuz of how they patronize center left, and how they justify right wing as (hey, some of its legal!), they are effectively center right. She was indignant. Am i wrong?
Even in the face of explicit fascism, with legal residents being disappeared to torture prisons, life-saving aid being illegally yanked, open discussion of a "third term" ...
... even now, it is so obvious that the NYT's primary worry is the left getting too worked up.
As a fascist runs wild and your country is literally on the verge of being lost for a generation, the key for the opposition is to be ... calm. Start by noting the *good* things he's done. Don't make *too* big a fuss. Don't go engaging in any symbolic acts of defiance.
I guess the only way forward is more sternly-worded letters.
It is precisely this mentality that Schumer & the rest of the Dems' ancient ruling class are forever trying to appease. Feckless, weak, useless, and all the while, patronizing & condescending AF.
This is the same trash approach that had every dem saying “look, Obamacare is far from perfect and has a lot of problems we’ll need to fix later, but as a first step it’s not so bad!” And wondering why no one seemed to understand or like the damn thing until years later.
This is how I felt during the Obama administration, it was awful watching him calmly capitulate to every right-wing freakout as he punched left anytime anyone criticized him for doing so.
“Perhaps the sentiments contained in the following pages, are not yet sufficiently fashionable to
procure them general favour; a long habit of not thinking a thing wrong, gives it a superficial
appearance of being right, and raises at first a formidable outcry in defense of custom…
Democrats like Schumer think they must spend an entire election cycle trying to reach swing voters who don't pay attention until the last six weeks anyhow.
GOP spends the whole time revving up their base then spend six weeks call Dems "out of touch" because they don't hate trans people.
I’ve been thinking about that last part a lot. This is how the Overton window has run off the right edge of the road. Right wing think tanks with highly disciplined messaging.
protecting democracy from tyranny should follow the exact same playbook that keeps me from getting written out of father's will, david. we musn't do anything untoward, david. what if someone decides not to attend our charity gala, david.
At this rate, they’d give Hitler the benefit of the doubt for not killing everyone on Earth. It is quite literally impossible for all of a president’s actions to be “illegal”.
Many of Trump’s actions are legal. And there are many people that he did not rape or cheat before he became President. And many taxes he did not evade. So we should not overreact.
Maybe I’m missing the necessary context but I find it to be an accurate statement. The problem I see so far is the Ds have no effective strategy for the mid-terms, at least none that I’ve seen. I think most political pundits I read agree with that observation
Like how about Congress just do its job being in charge of the funds it’s apportioned to various government programs instead of just letting Trump performatively take a hatchet to everything?
This is not centrism in my opinion. It's fecklessness. The two are not inextricably linked. A centrist can draw a line in the sand and fearlessly defend that line. It may be a bit different line. This essayist is just spouting magical thinking. M
The NYT should go dark for a week and the URL redirect to: https://youtu.be/2zQcb7DbXAA

Bottom line: The Times' wealthy owners and managers can afford to flee this nation if democracy falls. They honestly don't care what happens to the rest of us.
The @nytimes.com and every other rich dude, except Pritzger, is saying be chill, let's get the tax cuts for US passed- keep your eyes on the prize. Then you can be all hysterical about ICE or Gaza. Just be cool for now.
Like Senator Susan Collins, they don't actually want to stop Trump, they just want to act "concerned" so they can avoid responsibility for the fascist mayhem that they won't do anything to actually stop.
Holy fuck. Until now, I’ve never been prouder that I cancelled my decades-long subscription to the NYT than the moment Maggie Haberman blocked me on Twitter. Eff the NYT.
Me too! 35 years and I can't believe I only miss the Science section and maybe the book review. I kept getting it and feeling increasingly stupid. So glad I did it.
Even from Namby, Pamby, Wishy, & Washy LLC; I'm very disappointed. Every order, every nominee, every pronouncement, every golf trip, every ounce of faux gold in the oval office is a further affront to democracy, the rule of law, the constitution, the voters, and the world at large. #ChaoticEvil
Can't even bring myself to read it. The headline and the source alone are enough to convey an overwhelming whiff of "Hitler loved dogs" and "Dems should keep their powder dry and send more sternly-worded letters" energy.
IDK, I already read the first half of what was pretty much the worst, most vapid and ridiculous article/interview ever today in the @nytimes.com. I'm really not sure I'm up for something else that might be equally that bad.
And people actually pay money to read this stuff.🤦♀️
Ross Douthat's interview of Keeperman? You're made of sterner stuff than I am - I couldn't do more than skim the 1st 1/4 before brain refused to continue. I'm thinking of dropping it into Gemini for a summary.
Cannot fathom why NYT gives that guy a national platform.
Here’s how that New York Times editorial would sound in the original German:
“The building of this coalition should start with an acknowledgment that Mr. Hitler is the legitimate chancellor and many of his actions are legal. Some may even prove effective.”
“On several key issues, his views were closer to public opinion than those of Democrats… He has largely closed the southern border, and many of his immigration policies are both legal and popular. He has reoriented federal programs to focus less on race, which many voters support.”
And while “many of his immigration policies are both legal and popular…”
…The NYTimes urges its loyal readers to disregard those other policies which may be illegal and/or unpopular… At least until current management gets the share price sufficiently high.
Not to be all crudely "Marxist", but the NYT ed board knows where their class loyalties lie. A resistance to Trump that is too "leftist" might find some other things that they want to change that the NYT would rather not be changed.
If your opposition is an openly undemocratic fascist oligarchy and you describe yourself as a moderate, what are you moderating towards? Where do you want to meet in the middle? This is 90”s era triangulation speak. Everything about it is wrong and it’s the reason we are where we are now.
Wow. Thank you for sharing that from the editorial board. But where the hell were they last fall?!! NYT pissed me off so badly with their sanewashing of him I canceled my subscription.

I am being completely serious when I say that I would love to find the person who composed this sentence and punch them right in the fucking mouth.
Not a joke! That's a real sentence!

I am officially the fucking joker.
I literally can’t read NYT because of what it does to my blood pressure

I'm still reading and I look forward to the part where they discuss how public opinion is informed in this great country.
I would love to hear what you believe is wrong with this statement.

I get that it's a joke on a pint glass, but it seemed to be chiding the "irresponsible" protest tactics. Hated it.
I’ll oppose him any way I goddamn want to oppose him.

The NYT is defending the aristocracy?

at this point, I feel like Americans are just willingly letting themselves be repeatedly screwed over.
Amazing work as usual nyt, keep it up.
