In collaboration with some colleagues, I'm offering free career support for people who have been affected by federal firings, funding cuts, and hiring freezes. Folks can request support at bit.ly/fedworkersup....

I would like to come up with a pithy by metaphor for our times. But this is just too wild to even comprehend

When the President of your university announces shuttering virtually all DEI offices and programs to “comply with the law” to protect students you have to wonder if they know what any of those words mean. Especially but not exclusively what is and isn’t the law.

Here's a cool new study from @dulaclab.bsky.social to cleanse your timeline: They show that a mouse's brain maintains an animal's need for social interaction in the same way that it tracks hunger, thirst and sleep! 🧪 #neuroskyence

If anyone has intel about this, we'd be happy to amplify anonymously. DM here or email to [email protected].

The CFPB has returned over $21 billion directly to Americans scammed by Wall Street. If you have been personally helped by the CFPB - if you've filed a complaint, got money returned to you, or benefitted from their work, I need to hear from you. www.warren.senate.gov/share-your-c...

The real story: US to replace highly vetted EB5 visa, which requires foreign investors to do actual business & create jobs in the U.S., with a program that essentially sells green cards to wealthy individuals for $5 million (paid to the govt to skip vetting). www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

National Press Club president Mike Balsamo issued the following statement after the White House seized power over press pool access from the WHCA: "The White House’s announcement today is a direct challenge to the independence of a free press in the United States."

A great overview piece and some interesting data for anyone teaching media systems, framing, agenda setting etc soon!

If you missed it, this series is worth reading: www.propublica.org/series/the-s...

Studies show that funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) contributed to 354 of 356 drugs (99.4%) approved by the FDA from 2010 to 2019. Recklessly slashing NIH funding will mean that patients will be waiting much longer for life-saving treatments.

If you're curious how a democracy transitions from a free press to state-run media, this is the kind of step you'd expect to see.

I always love new #dataviz from @infobeautiful.bsky.social, but the scale comparisons of current Ukraine & WWII is staggering informationisbeautiful.net/visualizatio...

"White parents who see themselves as egalitarian must recognize that the stakes are now higher than ever. If you want to raise children who reject racism rather than passively absorbing it, right now, today, talk with your child about race and racism." www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-...

Several good things are happening according r/fednews so I am going to drop them here. If federal workers are fighting back, how much more us? A thread/

Americans proposed that Ukraine concede half of the profits from its mineral rights in perpetuity... in exchange for essentially nothing. This is not a monetary proposition, let alone a "deal," but rather the demand that Ukraine become a permanent American colony. snyder.substack.com/p/recoup-the...

We (@knightcolumbia) are launching a new research initiative on "Federal Funding and the First Amendment"--a topic that has suddenly become hugely significant. The call for proposals is here: knightcolumbia.org/blog/call-fo...

Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️

🚨 NEW: Wow, Trump's former VP Mike Pence just called Trump out for lying about Ukraine.

Not surprised @jmping.bsky.social is helping to leading these kinds of efforts in Michigan. Are they happening elsewhere? (How can I help?) #commsky #ica25 #mediapsych www.michigandaily.com/news/governm...

Over 650 political scientists who have dedicated our lives to the study of democracy & government, have signed this letter enumerating our deep concerns about this administration’s actions that undermine the Constitution and the rule of law. Please share. urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=htt...

I understand why these stories exist but it’s important to be clear that he’s not “saving” 16 billion, he’s choosing, personally, without oversight, to wipe out 16 billion dollars of government services to veterans and the disabled and food safety etc etc

1/ I am seeing a lot of comments on the slashing of NIH support along the lines of “universities should just spend their huge endowments.” I’m the last person to cheer on the institutional stratification rising endowments have contributed to. But let me explain why this is not a solution.

I was just literally warning my niece not to put a period tracker on her phone--and I was worried I sounded like I had lost my mind.

NEW: Despite all appearances, the White House insists that Elon Musk is not in charge of DOGE. US Doge Service employees can't get a straight answer about who is.

NEW: A government employee for Notify. gov, a system used by agencies to send mass texts to the public, has resigned in protest after an Elon Musk ally demanded root access to it. They said the system contains the public's phone numbers & private info: www.404media.co/musk-ally-de...

From Benjamin Kirkbride (via from FB): Hey everyone, I am one of the State Organizers for the Ohio branch of 50501. We are holding a protest this Monday in partnership the Mayday Coalition at the Statehouse in Columbus. There will also be a protest in Cleveland. More info can be found at 50501oh.io

This is frightening. And it makes me wonder what else Trump expects to get from Adams, because this is very ugly and heavy-handed.

Howard is R1! ….juuust in time for <waves hands at everything>…. #glasscliff

This model of a shadow cabinet is common in other democratic systems and would serve us well right now @aoc.bsky.social @maxwellfrost.bsky.social @warren.senate.gov @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social @ilhanmn.bsky.social

The American National Election Study is an NSF funded publicly available, incredibly rich dataset that tracks American public opinion, vote choice and evaluations of government that has been in the field since 1948. It is an incredible resource for teaching and research and must be protected.

The National Park Service eliminated references to transgender people from its Stonewall National Monument web page, removing the “T” in references to LGBTQ+ on the official site for the Greenwich Village monument, which marks a milestone in the fight for gay rights.

A government by,of, and for the people might need to listen to what people actually think

Would love to see communication organizations follow. @icahdq.bsky.social or National Communication Association?

It is "Wake Wednesday" for Higher Education at the Ohio Statehouse as the dangerous overhaul of higher ed in the state -- SB1 -- has been voted out of committee and will likely go to the full Senate today, despite overwhelming opposition 800+ testimonies, 200+ oral testimonies!

Testimonies are on-going tonight (last I heard 210 people were slated to make oral testimonies today!), committee vote is tomorrow morning

My heart ached when I was reminded that Aaron Swartz was prosecuted for trying to make academic knowledge more accessible to the public. Meta, meanwhile, is doing it for their own bottom line. I'm going to guess that no one at Meta will be looking at spending 35 years in jail for this.

I think it's worth repeating plainly that a federal judge halted Musk's federal funding freeze nearly two weeks ago but funds are still very much being frozen in violation of the court order.

The biggest story in the country right now is how many lawsuits DOJ is losing trying to defend Musk and Trump. I've never seen so many courts, so clearly outraged at the federal government. The latest one, blocks cuts at HHS and FDA. Visit www.democracydocket.com to stay informed.
