Next, our 2nd preprint of the week (!), this one driven by @madelouhart.bsky.social Previously: Mitochondrial inhibition impairs cell proliferation by constraining aspartate (ASP) availability. Here: we investigate the kinetics of ASP depletion/ proliferation impairments and...surprises ensue!

Excited to share a recent preprint by Oliver Newsom, where we evaluate the functional contributions of serum for cancer cell proliferation. Inside: A broadly applicable serum-free media, Quantitative lipid uptake characterization, Evidence lipid scavenging > synthesis for cancer cell proliferation.

excited to share a new preprint from our lab! led by the outstanding (& newly minted PhD) @thebiokimist.bsky.social we first uncover a basis for conditional HK2 essentiality in HPLM - leveraging this dependence then leads us to distinct rationale underlying why the Warburg Effect is beneficial!

A post over a decade in the making… 🙌beyond excited to share our work out today in @science.org. We found that retrograde (mitonuclear) signaling regulates the identity and maturity of metabolic tissues.🧵 1/6 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

It is lipid time! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Grateful to have been included in this Viewpoint! It’s fun to see where others think the future of lipids is going! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Finally made the effort to go back to that other app that used to be the bird app and actually delete my account… feels good!

This account is for sharing info with US scientists, both extramural and intramural to NIH, about attacks on science in the US. Education is power, and we can help advocate for science and medicine together. 💪🧪 We are a team of NIH people. Please ask us questions you might have.

In the present discussions about NIH and the need for reform, two recurring points I am seeing are: (1) NIH doesn't fund truly high impact research (2) NIH needs to experiment with alternative approaches to peer review, particularly for high risk-high impact research 1/n

If you had a study section or similar NIH travel canceled, or indeed if you have not, can you reply with the dates of the meeting and whether it's on or not? Would be good to get a sense of what time period this applies to for now (esp if NIH is muzzled and can't announce it...)

Happy New Year. I’m pleased to report publication of the Ducker lab’s latest cancer metabolism paper led by graduate student Kyle Dunlap in @cp-cellreports.bsky.social www.cell.com/cell-reports.... 1/n

'Using a mouse in which NDI1 is ubiquitously expressed (...) the authors found that the presence of NDI1 prevented the ability of metformin to reduce glucose levels in healthy and obese mice. The inescapable conclusion is that metformin reduces glucose levels via the inhibition of complex I.'

My holiday wish this year was one pic of the lab and their +1’s at the holiday party - last year I waited in the photo booth line 3 times and every time we got to the front someone had run off to get a new drink etc. I’m so proud of this group, and love what we have built together!

I can't pretend to understand hackathons but this is so impressive- a diagnosis for 40% of participants at a rare disease hackathon www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The lab’s first preprint is live! We explored how mitochondrial proteins get modified by phosphopantetheine (4’PP) in mammals, and found that it’s absolutely required for respiration! Check it out! biorxiv.org/cgi/content/...

Excited to share the first publication from the lab! MtFAS: coming soon to a metabolism context near you! authors.elsevier.com/a/1iHu15WXUl...

Very proud of our summer interns including GVSU senior Bio major Morgan Canfield, who presented a poster on her summer research at #WMRUGS today! The lab’s first undergraduate poster!

My department at the Van Andel Institute is hiring a new faculty member! If you study #metabolism and like positive, supportive environments with great resources and people, come be my colleague! @futurepislack.bsky.social vai.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/VAICar...

Lab #FatBearWeek brackets are posted!

VAI is hosting a symposium on the intersection of epigenetics and metabolism - check it out! There are some great speakers lined up.

This seems cool.

New to Bluesky! Looking for my science community!
