NEW: Official advisers CCC say UK shld cut emissions 87% by 2040 ⚖️Net cost of net-zero 73% less than thought 💷Total cost to 2050 = £108bn (~£4bn/yr, 0.2% GDP) 🏡🚗H’hold energy/fuel bills to fall £1,400 🔌Electrification is key THREAD + charts www.carbonbrief.org/... 1/10

The UK is showing that it's possible to align climate action, economic growth and high-wage jobs. Net-zero economy growth in 2024: 10% Net-zero jobs pay: £5,600 per year above national average www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Acting now saves costs in the future “The sooner we act, the sooner we benefit. Every CCC forecast has shown the cost of action falling.” www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Things are moving very clearly in the right direction

Well of course a man whose fund owns Chevron, ExxonMobil, Shell, Equinor and other fossil fuel companies is going to fight net zero. But clean tech makes us all richer while dirty energy just makes Marshall richer in the short term. on.ft.com/3X3MpLn

This is very well put: “America’s very own surrender monkey is Vladimir Putin’s useful idiot”. “Trump’s giveaways… are shameful appeasement, amounting to betrayal.” www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Some good news for a change Scientists found solar farms had a greater number of species & individual birds per hectare than surrounding arable land Solar did not pose a threat to national food security, esp when built on low or moderate grade agricultural land www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Yes, there's money to be made in the energy transition. Smart folks in Europe would spot that manufacturing and energy security opportunity.

Teslas turn toxic as sales crash in Europe and the UK arstechnica.com/cars/2025/02...

While Europe agonises about its 2035 ICE phase out and Germany's Merz demands a rethink, German manufacturers BMW, VW and Mercedes are seeing a massive benefit from UK demand and more ambitious 2030 phase out. Our future prosperity is electric and delays will cost us dearly.

“Decarbonisation is better for growth than not decarbonising” Yep, that’s exactly right. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

My annual decarbonization presentation is here. 200 slides, covering everything from water levels in Lake Gatún to sulfur dioxide emissions to ESG fund flows to Chinese auto exports to artificial intelligence. www.nathanielbullard.com/presentations

This is what a good subsidy system can do! Easy to access and generous. Other European countries should take note. Thanks for the good news @janrosenow.bsky.social

The EU set very ambitious targets for reducing fossil gas consumption. So far, the EU is on track for meeting the REPowerEU targets. Data from @bruegel.bsky.social

Good morning with good news: China's oil demand peaks in 2025, five years ahead of schedule, says China's National Petroleum Corp. Why? EVs reached 50% of auto sales in 2024. Electricity used by EVs rose 38%. China's gasoline demand falls 4%-5%/year! #energysky www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Today marks 80 years since the liberation of the #Auschwitz concentration camp. As we honour the memory of the victims, we stand firm in the defence of human rights, working every day to promote the values of peace, justice, tolerance and respect. #NeverForget

"It is not entirely rational" On how far right parties exploit the emotions triggered by climate disasters to gain support. on.ft.com/40yPggd

I like the sentiment here:"The Maga antipathy for anything green strengthens the case for doubling down on incentives to make more profitable in Europe the decarbonisation investments that have just become less profitable in the US." on.ft.com/4awDRCa

This is the article to read today to feel empowered that we can actually do something about the dystopian world around us. “The problem is not that we do not know how to regulate or that we do not have the power to do so….It's a political issue, not a technical one.”

The FT says the US under Trump will be left on the wrong side of energy history and I agree. And they don’t even mention that EU demand for gas has been declining steadily over the past 5 years. When peak Chinese oil demand meets ‘drill, baby, drill’ on.ft.com/3CbKGg1

NEW | Solar generates more EU electricity than coal for the first time in 2024 🇪🇺☀️ Renewables made up nearly HALF of the electricity mix last year, while fossil power fell to a historic low ⚡ ember-energy.org/lat...

This masterful analysis is totally worth a re-read as we watch Trump 2 unfold. Let's all become eco-populists.

Why did Trump suspend energy efficiency and fuel economy rules? @robinsonmeyer.bsky.social explains: to create demand for oil and gas in an already saturated US market.

A dementia-addled Trump claims that Spain is a “BRICS nation.” (He may be thinking of South Africa, the “S” in BRICS) (video from @acyn.bsky.social)

Don't look now, but global carbon dioxide emissions not only aren't declining, they're rising faster than ever.

I agree that the energy transition is inevitable and the only question is how fast it goes. We need to understand the social, cultural, political and financial blockages and work to overcome them to limit the damage from climate change.

China and the other Nordics plus the UK will soon follow suit. There's a challenge moving the rest of the world but it's inevitable. It will be nice when Norway stops being such a climate hypocrite living off all the oil it sells, and even nicer when we decarbonise heat and get rid of gas.

Heartening to see the EV revolution in China reflected in declining oil demand. If 3/4 of cars sold in 2030 are electric as forecast then even the growing (problematic) petrochemical demand will not be enough to offset the decrease in oil consumption from road transport. on.ft.com/3E8Pp2n

🌎 It’s time to reclaim social media. Billionaires & venture capital shouldn’t control our digital lives. #FreeOurFeeds is raising $4M to build a public-interest alternative. Chip in today to make it happen freeourfeeds.com

Thank you @henrymance.bsky.social for getting this into the mainstream press. I’ve been reading about it and worrying for a few years, it’s sadly all too true. Hopefully now it will get more attention…and more support for climate action. I’m sharing with many friends who take the ft seriously!

Although we knew this the headline and lack of an alternative plan are very disappointing. All the more important for the U.K. government to sort out the spark gap, reduce the cost of electricity, and make heat pumps the most cost effective option.

Low electricity prices are a prerequisite for high levels of electrification. There are no high electrification regions with high electricity prices. Great chart from @rockymtninst.bsky.social

“Soon it will be the EU’s turn. What the union owes its citizens is…. to firmly and intently show that even interplanetary amounts of wealth don’t mean impunity, and that some things – like democracy – are not for sale.”

This is a great idea for Spain where around 70% of the population lives in apartment blocks, most have balconies, and there's loads of sunshine 🌞
