I was looking at men who have been arrested, had been a teacher in Worcester. There is one. He was arrested while on holiday in Lake District, had been a scout leader, and would match against your guy's age.

I think his dog was a boxer. The picture looks quite like a boxer and he says "my dear old dog’s diagnosis with lymphoma". Boxers have a 4-6x higher chance of developing lymphoma than other breeds.
