We are a community group standing up for nature and trying to protect the wildlife of Betteshanger Country Park. It is a site where wildlife is flourishing but where planning permission has been granted for a luxury hotel and surf lagoon.

The dismissal of net zero as 'impossible' by Kemi Badenoch MP undermines the urgency of the climate & nature crisis unfolding around us. ❗ Net zero is essential if we're serious about protecting the wildlife we cherish, the places we love, and the future we leave our children. (1/2)

A worrying development. Nature bashing must stop! “Meanwhile, environmental guidance, including hundreds of pages on protection of bats, will be reviewed, while environmental permits for some low-risk and temporary projects will be removed” www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Absolutely extraordinary to see the Bat Conservation Trust singled out in this government document as an NGO to be ignored. Labour REALLY hate bats, don't they? 🦇 www.gov.uk/government/p...

🦇We are deeply concerned by the government’s latest rhetoric, which wrongly blames bats for slowing house building and infrastructure projects. Better planning needs real solutions, not blame games. BCT's thoughts on this here: www.bats.org.uk/news/2025/03... #bats #planning

Lizard orchid rosettes at Betteshanger Country Park. Over 620 will be translocated as they are in the way of a proposed surf lagoon. The Park supports the second most important colony of Lizard orchids in the country.

1 in 6 species are now at risk of extinction in the UK We must use the #PlanningBill to turn the tide of decline We need bold leadership, collaboration & smart planning for a future where nature, climate, people & economy thrive together Take action today > action.rspb.org.uk/page/159517/...

Nature-friendly farming is key to tackling the nature and climate crises, ensuring long-term food security. We agree with our friends @rspb.bsky.social our farmers need certainty, not funding that’s switched on and off.

Sir Keir has misrepresented the impact of conservation on housing in Ebbsfleet. The majority of the homes are going ahead. The distinguished jumping spider isn’t even in the development area, but it is a precious habitat. Let's move beyond nature vs. growth - sustainable development benefits us all.

Important statement from @kentwildlife.bsky.social about the way that the government is deliberately misrepresenting what has happened at Ebbsfleet.

In case you missed it... the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan was released last week... 🍃 #ICYMI uk.chm-cbd.net/NBSAP

‘The government will set out a new approach that will allow beavers to live wild’ www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Positive steps - the Government just launched UK nature recovery goals during talks in Rome on the biodiversity crisis. It's had a cautious welcome from conservation leaders, but they want legally binding targets and workable, properly funded policies to make it a reality. wcl.org.uk/environmenta...

It’s official, 2024 was the worst year for bumblebees since records began🚨 The latest findings from #BeeWalk, our national bumblebee monitoring scheme, have revealed bumblebee numbers declined by almost a quarter (22.5%) across Great Britain💔 Read on: www.bumblebeeconservation.org/british-bumb...

Old Park in Canterbury is a superb area of acid grassland with a flora including Harebell, Bedstraw (or Clove-scented) Broomrape & Mossy Stonecrop, & loads of Nightingales. The MoD owns it and has put it up for sale. Join the campaign to save this extraordinary site canterburyoldpark.org.uk

‘The net zero economy grew by 10% in 2024 and generated £83bn in gross value added’ www.theguardian.com/environment/...

This Nature paper is based on data from 1,705 studies - yet more confirmation of what we already knew. They are broadly toxic to microbes, fungi, invertebrates and vertebrates and quietly wiping out biodiversity. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

I published these 10 & 12 years ago, when it seemed that frames like ‘get rid of the green crap’ & environmental groups being lumped into an ‘anti-growth coalition’ were on their way out. Truth is though that there is no growth on a polluted & degraded planet. Perhaps I’ll write new editions.

Populism seeks simplistic scapegoats for big, complex problems. Labour thankfully won't scapegoat the EU or immigrants but, shamefully, is scapegoating nature instead. This is bullying. And it is stupid when we need a habitable planet stay alive, happy and well. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Keir Starmer, your government promised bold action on climate and nature - but this isn’t it. ❌ It’s a move that risks tearing up our chances for a future where nature, people, and the economy thrive.

Why does the planning system allow development on Local Wildlife Sites? In Ashford Kent permission has been granted for a bike factory on the South Willesborough Dykes LWS a vital wildlife corridor with GC newts, Dormice, Bats etc.

Nightingale territories were recorded at Betteshanger Park for the first time last year.No mitigation is proposed for this threatened species. They would be directly impacted by the surf lagoon.

The Friends of Betteshanger are new to Bluesky. We are a group defending nature in our local Country Park standing up for the Turtle Doves, the Nightingales, the Water Voles, the rare invertebrates, the Lizard orchids and so much more in the face of permission for a hotel and surf lagoon.
