British Higher Education in full retreat - because no-one will get a grip and show responsibility.

I do a bit of analysis of what makes industrial action a useful tool and when it isn’t. I believe some people label the position “we should consider the material and power dynamics of a situation” “industrially pessimistic”. I prefer to be clear eyed.

I’m 57 years old and 26 years diagnosed #HIV+. If you’ve recently been diagnosed please know: Your life isn’t over. You can still be healthy. You can have children. And grandchildren. You can have loving relationships and great, uninhibited sex (these may come hand in hand... or not).

We can’t say much more than this at present about the outcome of the meeting and other motions passed, but will do so as soon as we’re able to. As Vivek says - please vote!

Analysis of media mentions on Elon Musk's X reveals that established news organisations are helping to boost Nigel Farage's party well out of proportion to its number of MPs

As was inevitable, the Welsh Government has intervened to stave off the possible collapse of its university sector. There's quite a bit of extra money, but note that it's for estates and new tech - signalling more mergers and redundancies ahead. (1/2) www.timeshighereducation.com/news/cash-st...

Few people know that studying anti-bird spikes almost got me arrested. 👮 I snapped this picture of carefully placed spikes on security cameras at a London train station—just because I thought it looked funny. Within seconds I was surrounded by police. They didn’t find it funny. 😬 1/5 #birds 🧪🪶

I've had a number of conversations, in person and by email, that have me excited for future work. I love people who truly care.

One of my favorite higher ed IT jokes is: “Eduroam is a well-designed protocol by which sysadmins at two different institutions can say ‘everything looks good here, must be the other school.’”

I have become addicted to the reddit forum for right moves. It provides a constant flow of really...er... interesting homes to look at. Choices were made.

I’d call them cowards, but they’re worse: panicked that Reform is coming for some of their yoon support, they’re trying to fend them off by throwing the actual fucking Equality Act under Farage’s bus. Genuinely evil.

I can confirm that muting Trump and Musk has 100% improved my timeline.

On top of the £10 million already announced this is a welcome move by Welsh Government. We all know it isn't enough (a band-aid on a severed finger) and something more creative will be needed. UCU Cymru and branches have been making case to MS's for months - hopefully it's sign that is paying off.

Quick reminder of this exciting event for PhDs and ECRs - with funding available to cover transport and accommodation.

If, like me, you are a UCU member and agree the union should stop wasting time and effort on a fruitless round of pay strikes at a time when tens of thousands of academic jobs are at risk, then please consider signing this open letter (link early on the document): ucucommons.org/2025/02/13/m...

I'd love to read it - I can't even find out how much it costs to join the organisation. A bit frustrating. Anyone with a login able to share the highlights?

Our oven has apparently such a common problem removing the light cover that, instead of fixing the problem, they made a tool that they can sell to me for £5.95 plus delivery. £10 for a tool for a problem they created with bad design #Grumpy

I love academic conversations where the joy of discussing the topic results in actions. From an hour yesterday, we now have a project plan for five different actions. From three conversations at EAHAD last week, I have three that I'm really excited by.

The number of UK universities actively making redundancies has now risen to 89. As predicted here, soon that number will rise to 90 and then 100. The process is inexorable, inevitable. qmucu.org/qmul-transfo...
