I am a cell and developmental biologist at the Living Systems Institute (LSI) in Exeter. We work on spreading Wnt signals and characterising cytonemes in zebrafish embryos, human neurons, and cancer using high-res imaging and mathematical modelling.

Only one week to go! And the slots fill up quickly.

BBSRC fellowships are now open! If anyone is interested in applying to join my team and working on Wnt signalling, growth factor transport mechanisms, cytonemes and zebrafish @lsiexeter.bsky.social then send me a PM! www.ukri.org/opportunity/...

'Teamwork makes the dream work'- This took on a whole new meaning with Ehsan Pishva @maastrichtu.bsky.social al and Tom Piers @CBS @exeter.ac.uk. This collaboration was so in sync that I'm starting to think we share a 🧠. 😉. Thanks for the good times and great results! @lsiexeter.bsky.social

1/1 Our recent research sheds light on how Alzheimer's disease interferes with communication between brain cells. We identified a specific pathway (Wnt/PCP-ROR2) contributing to synapse loss, a crucial element in cognitive decline. tinyurl.com/4vh2uk3x @jcellsci.bsky.social @lsiexeter.bsky.social

Come to Oxford for one of the most interesting meetings of the year 2025.

Over 60 German universities quit social media platform X. Platform accused of failing to uphold values of diversity, freedom, and scholarship.

Wow, this is big: More than 60 universities and higher education institutions in Germany have announced their departure from the social media platform X, citing its failure to support values such as diversity, freedom, and scholarship. aktuelles.uni-frankfurt.de/english/goet...

Evening run after a very productive Friday. Yes!

What a delightful remedy for the January blues. Light & Sound show @exetercathedral.bsky.social.

It's so great starting the year with some ginger biscuits! Thanks to Gemma, our "new" postdoc: Zebrafish Rocks, also in 2025! @lsiexeter.bsky.social @zebrafishrock.bsky.social

🚨Now hiring: The Yang lab is seeking an MRC-funded technician to support our work on neural-pancreas interplay. DM me for informal inquiries. #zebrafish #islet jobs.exeter.ac.uk/hrpr_webrecr...

Happy New Year! I hope 2025 is good for you all. We start this year with a somewhat controversial review. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti.... Here, we discuss how a cell receives signalling receptors from neighbouring cells, allowing the receivers to transduce a previously unknown signal. 1/3

This 14th Century door at Exeter Cathedral is thought to have the oldest existing cat flap.

Merry Fishmas Everyone!

Good to see @cbmoens.bsky.social and @josh-brickman.bsky.social here. Welcome!

My brain: Apparently capable of processing info at 10 bits/s. Also, my brain: After the Xmas party @lsiexeter.bsky.social 'Hmmm... skeets... must... compose... witty... remark... about... mulled... wine...'. Tomorrow, I need to read this cool paper shorturl.at/0O8lX from @mameister4.bsky.social

Welcome Cecila @cbmoens.bsky.social on 🦋.

Great to see Chris @lowelab.bsky.social and Alistair @mcgregorlab.bsky.social here. The evo-devo community is growing on bsky.

Same here.

Good to see @simoneschindler81.bsky.social and @vprincelab.bsky.social here.

We need international talent. We need international students. We need a Youth Mobility Scheme. We need Erasmus+ - for the next generation. www.europeanmovement.co.uk/erasmus-peti...

What a great PhD viva. Congrats Dr Sheng-yuan. And congrats to the ‚Doktorvater‘ @matthias-krause.bsky.social @kingscollegelondon.bsky.social It was a special exam filled with so many discussions about Wnt signalling with Sheng-yuan and Sebastian. The WntUK @wntuk.bsky.social community is growing.

It’s free to publish in JCS – there are no submission charges, membership fees, page charges, or colour charges. For details on this and other reasons to choose JCS, visit the @biologists.bsky.social exhibit (booth 517) at #CellBio2024 or visit our website: journals.biologists.com/jcs/pages/re...

„It’s a beautiful day to submit a manuscript.“ Dr McDreamy

It's okay to try an experiment, but if it doesn't work, you have to have the courage to discard the hypothesis and try a different approach. Maybe it's time to apply this basic rule to politics. Naively, I would say to the UK, join the single market and pronto! www.theguardian.com/business/202...

Congratulations on your paper "blah, blah, embargo, blah", which has been accepted!

Excellent to see @gaynorasmith.bsky.social, @droutledge.bsky.social and @devneuro.bsky.social here! Now it fits!

Next manuscript re-submitted.

Wow, this preprint made my day: tinyurl.com/5n8uk533. We find the Wnt receptor Ror2 on cytonemes tinyurl.com/28nnwwm3 and @zunlongke.bsky.social & @danieljleahy.bsky.social show EGF receptors on extracellular vesicles. Receptor spreading has vast consequences for our understanding of signalling.

The final version is online: journals.biologists.com/dev/article/.... We wish a pleasant read! @wntuk.bsky.social @lsiexeter.bsky.social @dev-journal.bsky.social @devbiol.bsky.social

Storm Darragh brings further disruption across Devon as strong winds continue. I have to go!

And, please, take the international students out of the immigration statistics and waive their visa fees. That would improve your immigration numbers and fix the university system immediately. And we would not need to increase the fees for our home students.Thanks. @teamlabouruk.bsky.social
