The #Arctic climate is changing rapidly! Our efforts at the @eor-wuerzburg.bsky.social & #UNIS on Svalbard to jointly develop research & teaching on understanding polar ecosystem dynamics using UAV remote sensing has been covered by @uni-wuerzburg.de's magazine einBLICK (German): go.uniwue.de/k00gq

Come study these most adorable - and tough - #Arctic ungulates with us! 🦌 Fully funded 4-year PhD position in Svalbard Reindeer Movement Ecology at The University Centre in #Svalbard: shorturl.at/DaHpw Application deadline is the 25th of April 2025!

A pretty mosaic? Actually 403 bits of plastic removed from the stomach of a dead shearwater chick. Startling new research using proteomics suggests multi-organ dysfunction is linked with plastic exposure. #plastics #birds #health #wildlife www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

I have created a Movement Ecology feed here on Bluesky! 🌍🐾 bsky.app/profile/did:... Currently, it tracks posts with the #movementecology, #animalmovement, #animalmigration, and #wildlifetracking tags from contributors. 🔹 Want to be added? Message me or reply here! #Ecology #WildlifeResearch

Just looking through images from our #CitizenScience project I realized that we have #PlasticCusts, even on Svalbard, in the #Arctic! This one was found by Birgit Lutz at Isflabukta beach in 2016. #Plastic

Our #earthobservation staff @schwalb-willmann.de and @bevanda.bsky.social did #uas #remotesensing courses for #Arctic applications on Svalbard and covered different #uas systems with #lidar multispectral and thermal sensors plus ##rspatial and #qgis data analysis #gischat @uniwuerzburg.bsky.social

Weather radars continuously register the movements of billions of animals in the air! We have now published datasets covering large parts of Europe, providing an overview of the aerial habitat in a way no other method can. Data is available on Alofdata.eu , see our blogpost: go.nature.com/3F0wQ0L

Off to #AAAI25! We're presenting #SatCLIP (w/ @marccoru.bsky.social, @estherrolf.bsky.social, @calebrob6.bsky.social & @lestermackey.bsky.social) at the 12.30-2.30pm poster session on Feb 28! To all Animovers out there: Our next workshop will take place from the 30th of November until the 13th of December 2025. More information about location, price and how to apply will follow soon....🤗🐒🦥🌎🐸🐊🕷️🪱

📖Published📖 Addressing the need for improved tree species classification, Puliti et al. present the FOR-species20K dataset, a large, diverse, individual tree point cloud DL-ready benchmark dataset for platform and sensor agnostic tree species classification tasks 🌳 🌎 🧪 https://buff.ly/4hI7P8F

Do Large Language Models (LLMs) possess ecological knowledge? For example, can they do tasks such as: (1) predict the presence of species at a location (2) generate range maps (3) list critically endangered species (4) perform threat assessment (5) estimate species traits

My institute is looking for a project coordinator / innovation manager - a permanent academic position. It's a great insitute, very international, pleasant and informal atmosphere. Deadline Feb 28; see stellen.uni-muenster.de/jobposting/d...

New paper by Fol et al. (2025) estimating that the central Arctic Ocean will be continuously ice free from 2035 onwards, already. This will have severe impacts on ice-dependent Arctic species. doi.org/10.1038/s432...

Snow & ice conditions have strong impacts on wildlife in the high Arctic. I'm glad to have had the chance discussing the value of remote sensing for Arctic wildlife ecology research with new collaborators from Europe & North America on Svalbard – hosted by @larissabeumer.bsky.social at UNIS. #arctic

Our staff members @bevanda.bsky.social and @schwalb-willmann.de are discussing arctic research with @larissabeumer.bsky.social and Prof Marco Schmidt @uniwuerzburg.bsky.social on Svalbard #Arctic #earthobs #science

Delighted to see this major initiative finally out. Led by @stefanopuliti.bsky.social and leveraging the huge @3dforecotech.bsky.social community's efforts we present a major AI benchmarking dataset with classification results for point cloud tree species identification. (1/3)

Some more good news for the Sentinel-2 mission! Sentinel-2A, which recently retired, has been given a temporary extension, where it will support S2B and S2C to provide additional data. Lots of hard work behind the scenes to make this happen. Glad to see it! sentinels.copernicus.eu/web/sentinel...

Recordings of the SSL4EO-2024 summer school are now released! This blog post summarizes what has been covered: langnico.github.io/posts/SSL4EO... Recordings: www.youtube.com/playlist?lis... Course website: ankitkariryaa.github.io/ssl4eo/ [1/3]

NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold. We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940. 2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.

The Global Climate Highlights 2024 report is now online. Delve in the analysis and access all the charts, information, and data on temperature, sea ice, precipitation, and greenhouse gas concentrations. Explore the data that defined 2024: https://bit.ly/40kQpcz #C3S #GCH2024

2024 was the warmest year on record with an average global temperature 1.6°C above pre-industrial level. It's the first year to exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial level, with every month but one since July 23 surpassing this threshold. Full Global Climate Highlights 2024: https://bit.ly/40kQpcz

Just a regular reminder: the ArcticDEM is one of the most beautiful spatial datasets out there. I've been working on a large tile set for our #arctic abrupt thaw mapping activities recently and I can't help but stop and take a peek as the data rolls in.
