They help the otherwise bare surface to gradually accumulate material, so eventually shrubs and grasses (and eventually trees) can grow in the deeper soil.

Mosses are essential "soil builders" - they grow on the bare #CanadianShield rock and trap loose material, like leaves, pine needles, and sand, as well as seeds and pollen from other plants. #research #restoration #EnvironmentalScience

For context, I lead smoking litter cleanups and have seen firsthand how extensive this problem is - we picked up ~70,000 cigarette butts in #Niagara during the 2022 #ButtBlitz 😬 🚬 @agreenerfuture.bsky.social
