I RAGED at this on the radio yesterday, and will repeat my mantra: you cannot (MUST NOT) ask people to develop 'resilience' or 'grit' against those things that are in your power to change. 'Develop resilience' so often means 'your disability is inconveniencing me, please be less disabled' 🧵

I Know What You Did Last Supper

There's a link between Labour preferring Reform voters to the younger, educated, socially liberal ones it actually has (for now!) and its support for manufacturing over HE. Both suggest it prefers the world that has gone to the world we actually have.

This is such a perfect article. Absolutely satisfying. I fucking love journalism. slate.com/culture/2025...

The 3 books currently on my bedside table. It's currently bit of a golden age for TV history nerds like me. Special interest, you say? Moi? #soautistic #suchgreatbooks @tobyhadoke.bsky.social @0tralala.bsky.social @davidbrunt.bsky.social

With each new episode of #sherlockanddaughter Thewlis rises up my rankings of on-screen Sherlocks - he’s really, really good & the scripts give him lots of great scenes to play. I hope this show runs and runs.

Today I learned that "give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for life" is not Lao Tzu, or Confucius, or whoever, but was in fact ... coined by William Makepeace Thackeray’s daughter, Anne Isabella Thackeray Ritchie, in her 1885 novel "Mrs. Dymond".

Apparently the government is very upset about comparisons between Starmer’s speech yesterday and Enoch Powell’s infamous ‘Rivers of blood’ speech. So it would be terrible if people kept sharing this image.

Really incredible story unraveling in this thread, where Amazon and other sites have seemingly been able to sell an academic textbook that was withdrawn in 2021 and never actually printed or published, without the knowledge of the press, editors or contributors. Something has gone deeply wrong!

FUN FACT: Helen Hunt is a stage name, her given name is The Iliad

The Prime Minister imitating Enoch Powell’s ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech is sickening. That speech fuelled decades of racism and division. Echoing it today is a disgrace. It adds to anti-migrant rhetoric that puts lives at risk. Shame on you, Keir Starmer.

If we were to accept this is a problem (I don’t) the trad Lab approach would be training, better wages & incentives etc to get Brits into these jobs. This is a straightforwardly right wing solution (to a problem that isn’t even a problem) & will only result in fewer staff. Regressive idiocy.

SO looking forward to this. Who else is coming?

Hey, so this thread moved me and guess what I tracked down a print copy of? Whitin Badger’s poetry chapbook Unicorn. Clearly in the classic self-published poet tradition, with occasional hand-lettered corrections. About half of this is love sonnets, my favorite poetic form.

I'm procrastinating, Stancil is getting dragged over it, and the Rewatchables podcast guys finally covered it, so I guess it's time for what I hope is my last thread ever on Star Wars. Let's do this. 🧵

Surprised & pleased to find #CountingCrows - never a political band by any stretch - rising to the moment with the savagely angry Boxcars on their new album Now we are all about God's love Flowers & Vaseline & Rubber gloves to cut the cancer from the nation Boxcars lined up at Grand Central Station

Nala wants you to know that she is very disappointed you are not rubbing her tummy.

Full disclosure: I too have a complete set of mostly pristine Eighth Doctor BBC Books (in a box, in a loft) and am using this as a way to gauge their potential value. However, it's still - you know - a COMPLETE SET and a great way to enter/revisit the Wilderness Years.

Someone is going to have a great few years reading through these. There's some amazing Kate Orman, Lawrence Miles, Lloyd Rose, Paul Cornell, Jonathan Morris, Paul Magrs and Lance Parkin books in there

I'm selling my complete set of mostly pristine 8th #DoctorWho BBC Books on ebay - RTs appreciated. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/16750382...

If you're on the fence about entering: trust me, you should enter. Good things happen when you do.

Trans men’s insight on this is so fucking valuable in understanding the nuances of what’s going on with men. We need to be amplifying them, and hopefully cis men can realize what is actually the source of their loneliness.

New Pope to be introduced gradually; extreme closeups of his hands, gun, helmet and armour throughout the next hour until a thrilling cliffhanger when he removes his helmet in mid shot to reveal his face as the theme music crashes in

David's explanations of the nuts and bolts of publishing are always interesting. If only publishing itself was as willing to be transparent. (And ofc you should be reading his excellent novels!) #BookSky 📚💙

Tired: why are these silly women not using the planet killing theft machine that does jobs badly and takes work off humans? Wired: why should companies be allowed to burn the world and steal from others instead of paying their staff?

LinkedIn is fucking bad for my mental health. All the people in my field falling over themselves to appease the great AI beast. Idiot turkeys voting for Xmas, the lot of them. But they think I'm some regressive luddite & so I'm basically unemployable :-( www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

When ever the Met Gala rolls around and I stumble across a picture of some person I'm supposed to recognise in absurd clothes I reflexively think two things: 1) It's the Hunger Games, and 2) Guillotines are due a comeback

I’ve not introduced myself for new friends & followers on here for a bit, so: hello! I’m Lou, and I’m an author and scriptwriter. I’ve written 4 YA & adult novels as me, plus another 4 YA novels as Maggie Harcourt, and some Doctor Who audio dramas for Big Finish. loummorgan.wordpress.com

For a movie to be classified as American, it must include: - Celebratory shooting in the air - Sidekicks (cracking wise) - Bad feeling about this, clearly expressed - Squad car nose-first in ditch, siren winds down - Diner waitress, no-nonsense - Whup-ass scene - Old lady says ‘motherfucker’

Walking through TVC with Tom Baker as he loudly declared that something or other was ‘distilled whippet shit’ was *joyous*. Sitting next to Christopher Fowler at the premiere of Hannibal, who was so kind & funny, & took my address & posted me a copy of Red Bride with a hilarious inscription.

When on earth are they going to learn that their number of people deported figures are meaningless to absolutely everybody. Liberal people are appalled and racists don't believe it or do not think it is enough. This is a dead end in which Labour with wither and die.

"Shortly before the 2024 election, Labour was polling at 44%, and now it struggles to stay above half that. Those people did not abandon the party over net zero, or over immigration. They voted for change, and everything the party says suggests they are instead delivering more of the same old shit."

As if I needed any more reasons to dislike my neighbours in Kent, my local council just went from Conservative stronghold to Reform stronghold. Dear God, I want out of this place.
