Personal acct. Library Director @ Ferguson Library in STL. Views are my own, NOT my employer - obviously. Libraries don't opine on govt corruption, share geekery, or babble about their day.

Republicans: threaten the lives and liberty of their political opposites. Democrats: accuse them of threatening their lives and liberty. Media: Gosh, things are getting so heated on both sides.

District courts don't determine policy. They look at existing policy (law) and determine whether Hegseth is breaking it.

That's California PLUS Texas PLUS Florida

Or, for that matter, online resources that discuss these issues. In their view, there should be criminal liability for even discussing controversial topics in a place where a minor might encounter them. The real effect is that all public discussion of sex and gender are silenced.

On its face, this is a campaign about school libraries. But that's just a cover. To threaten librarians, the AG's office has invoked child protection laws that could be used to arrest anyone who sells or even so much gives a book to a minor with offending passages. Or keeps it in their house.

The books that they're pulling from school libraries deal with sexual assault, gender identity, puberty, sexuality, racism and homophobia. The books include acclaimed literature like Beloved, Call Me By Your Name, The Handmaid's Tale. The government has called them "patently pornographic."

Schools in Florida have established guidelines and processes for removing books reported as inappropriate. But the AG is overruling those decisions and calling for books to be banned for minors. Over 11,000 books have been pulled from shelves statewide. www.yahoo.com/news/hillsbo...

We should have an understanding that if you wear a mask OR don't have your name tag, you're not a real cop, and all bets are off. Real govt agents shouldn't hide their face, & should accept responsibility. We should never be comfortable with a government that uses secret police cosplaying as cops.

Have you ever seen anything more pathetic than watching all of these armed and armored cosplay pretend police struggle to get one scrawny kid in a vehicle?

I love how the timestamps on your posts suggest that this book is lingering in your mind. You gave your last reaction post, then an hour later a deeper insight.

Was there, like, some concern that he might leave his post or the flag might come down? 🤔

In season 1, watch what the empire is doing and why. In season 2 and later season 1, the rebellion takes focus. Luthen and his plots are one thread that will be woven into a tapestry.

It's a show about systems, systemic issues. It has more in common with The Wire than with... I dunno...some punchy, grabby show that's designed to hit dopamine receptors in every scene.

Fascism starts that way. Rebellions also.

And that's why he got elected. They wanted a s*** poster instead of a leader, and that's what they got.

Public libraries are about access to resources/services, not just access to books. Books are one type of resource. Another type of resource is space with air conditioning and wi-fi which you aren't charged any money to use.

It's funny how the second one reversed. People will believe whatever gives them an excuse to oppress women and give men a blank check to misbehave

What is even more amazing is how entrenched this belief is and how "biological" it's perceived to be. When I tell undergrads about this they just can't comprehend it.

*The average age of first marriage in Britain in the 16/17 centuries was about 24 for women, 28 for men. *Between antiquity and the late 18th century it was a common cultural AND medical belief that women had powerful uncontrolable sexual urges, while men were characterised by self-control.
