Year after year, Belgian clubs find uncut gems from unusual places, often at undervalued prices, polish them up then sell them for significant profits. Their recruitment model is perhaps the most diverse in football, and certainly among the most successful. Llew Davies reveals how they do it.

Club Brugge do lots of things well, one of which being the use of their B team. Numerous players have made the step up to become A team regulars in recent years after a season or two with the B team in the second division. They're an example of how the model can (and should) work.

The latest African prospect to make an immediate impact in Europe is 18-year-old Yan Diomandé for recently-relegated CD Leganés. Extremely athletic, a direct dribbler able to eliminate defenders with ease, and has some nice details to his game that needs polishing. Remember the name.

What do Michael Olise, Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Cole Palmer and Murillo all have in common? They smashed single-season U-23 records in 2024/25. Discover them all in Monday Night SCOUTED.

England are out of the #U17EURO. Despite Italy beating Belgium, they conceded a cheap goal in the 89th minute against a Czechia side (that had nothing to play for) which knocks them out at the group stage on goal difference. Huge disappointment for a very talented group. They're better than that.

What a special achievement for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise to win another league title—the 12th in their history but first in 90 years. Just over ten years ago, they had to win a play-off to survive relegation to the fourth tier. One of Europe's grand old clubs are back on top in Belgium.

In a summer set to be dominated by strikers, one to watch out for is Emanuel Emegha. For his full SCOUTED debut, Ashwin Raman has broken down the unique skillset of the Strasbourg goalscorer, detailing why his attributes are suited to specific teams with specific styles and not others—yet.

If you want to know how highly Joan García is thought of at Espanyol, this image sums it up: here he is getting mobbed in a pitch invasion after he played a key role in their 2-0 win to clinch safety in LaLiga. Like that scene out of Superman. Saviour.

With an average age of 24.3 years old, Sunderland are the youngest-ever team to win promotion to the Premier League. A side built on eye-catching recruitment from all over Europe and supplemented by academy graduates, 22 of the 30 players they used throughout the season were aged 24-or-under.

You couldn't have two more perfect goalscorers for Sunderland: Eliezer Mayenda, an obscure signing from Europe, and Tom Watson, a home-grown graduate of their academy. That sums up how the club have built back to this level, investing in young talent from academy and abroad.

If you built a prime Premier League midfielder in a lab, it wouldn't look that different to Sheffield United's Vinícius Souza. Tall, strong, robust, covering space with power, challenging with intensity, playing with an edge. Rock-solid platform.

You've probably never heard of him, but Evann Guessand has just had a breakout season in Ligue 1 at OGC Nice. In fact, the 23-year-old was the closest data match to the gamebreaking Mohamed Salah—which is why he is the subject of our first winger Archetype. More on SCOUTED: bit.ly/SCgamebreaker

Florian Wirtz to Liverpool is a big bollocks move. Michael Edwards has planted his on the table.

Get used to reading and hearing much more about 24-year-old Joan García. Clubs are clambering over each other already to sign the next big thing in goalkeeping from Espanyol, a cross-claiming shot-stopper that makes the difficult look simple. More in The Shortlist: bit.ly/4jm1oJ4

Real Madrid signed highly-rated 18-year-old Real Zaragoza captain Jesús Vallejo ten years ago this summer. Since then, he has played 34 games for the club, winning ten trophies including two Champions League titles. He leaves Real Madrid at the end of his contract this summer.

Kodai Sano is a name to keep an eye out for this off-season. After two strong seasons at NEC Nijmegen, he has the credentials to play for the big Eredivisie teams—and he's just received his first call-up to the senior Japan squad. His career should be kicking up a gear this summer.

*NEW* In my first piece for @scoutedftbl.com, I've written about the much-coveted Emanuel Emegha and his unique profile within the context of Strasbourg's tactical approach, and what it all means for the clubs interested in him. Do give it a read! scoutedftbl.com/why-everyone...

Big news dropping in five minutes...

Here's some words I wrote about Max Dowman

What a week for IF Brommapojkarna. Viktor Gyökeres won the Primeira Liga on Sunday, now Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Bergvall have won the UEFA Europa League on Wednesday. Imagine how many kids in their academy – one of the biggest and most productive in the world – will be inspired by this.

Micky van de Ven being a freak. Important.

A total of nine academy graduates feature in the Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United matchday squads for this UEFA Europa League final. All of them are on the substitutes' bench. One of them is 37-year-old Jonny Evans.

If you want to get ahead of the curve on the future of football, you should follow the #U17EURO. The opening round gave us a glimpse of an "octopus" at the heart of a strong French side, a bulldog-like battler in England's midfield, and the prodigious Max Dowman. Here's our standouts from MD1.

The forward options in France's preliminary squad for the 2025 #U21EURO: 🇫🇷 Jean-Mattéo Bahoya 🇫🇷 Noah Edjouma 🇫🇷 Hugo Ekitiké 🇫🇷 Tidiam Gomis 🇫🇷 Arnaud Kalimuendo 🇫🇷 Eli Junior Kroupi 🇫🇷 Wilson Odobert 🇫🇷 Loum Tchaouna 🇫🇷 Mathys Tel Not a bad selection to pick from, is it?

In awe at the sheer size of Luca Brughmans, Belgium captain at this year's #U17EURO. Someone go get that GIF of Willem Dafoe.

This is the model MLS should be following. Having been saying this for years.

Max Dowman showed himself in England's #U17EURO opener against Belgium. Despite being the youngest player on the pitch by a mile, the only one born in 2009, he was still a cut above—skill, athleticism, fearlessness, personality. You can't keep a talent like him under wraps for long.

'How to recruit like the Belgian Pro League' – our latest detailed analysis, powered by SkillCorner data – has just dropped on the SCOUTED website. Go find it before we post it.
