Trump’s lurking assault on Canada rests on endless lies and irrational populism theconversation.com/trumps-lurki...

A BBC study just found that generative AI can't even generate news story synopses with any consistent accuracy, and here we are happily pretending it's a symmetrical replacement for education and experience

I'd encourage everyone to read the whole Statement Meanwhile here is my PERSONAL interpretation of the allegations in SoC and the events around it: 1-Athana aggressively recruited to CEO role by govt: they know she's highly competent and can be trusted https://buff.ly/3QmG6ie

The Verge EIC: "there’s a nonzero chance the govt will punish our work. All that talk about the media being the enemy of the people is turning into concrete legal action against publishers, broadcasters, and platforms that don’t do what the Trump WH wants. " www.theverge.com/decoder-podc... #media

Why annexing Canada would destroy the United States #cdnpoli theconversation.com/why-annexing...

Wow. 👏 This is a must read: vancouversun.com/news/opinion...

If this were Putin talking about Latvia, or Xi talking about Vietnam, there would be statements of condemnation from international organizations… at this point, the silence is more than awkward…

This just in from @maxfawcett.bsky.social www.nationalobserver.com/2025/02/07/o...

"A worker was ordered to pull the plug on the speaker after staff realized the session was audible." Donald Trump is not joking about making Canada the 51st state, Justin Trudeau warns in hot mic comments www.thestar.com/politics/don... 🇨🇦

No other premier in Alberta history could survive 48 hours under the cloud of suspicion Smith now faces. Over half a billion dollars makes Sky Palace look like a sandcastle. If her cabinet and MLAs aren't meeting to discuss, it's a dereliction of duty. www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/alber...

This is an absolute bombshell read. My jaw is on the floor. www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/alber...

There's sentence after sentence of wow in the latest @carrietait.bsky.social scoop on Danielle Smith and AHS. www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/alber...

For Americans, it was one of 100 shocking headlines during Trump's first 15 days of office. For Canadians, it was a nation-transforming event of historic proportions

This is a really powerful column. And much of it is dead-on. calgaryherald.com/opinion/kell...

Canadians are worried tonight. I’m worried too, but I’m not scared. Let me share with you why:

Economic nationalism has never been good for Canada. But for the moment some of it is necessary

1/ Musk seeking control over nerve systems of the federal government. As someone who spent a decade studying how centralized information systems are used for coercion this is a five alarm fire. We need to name it, identify risks, and seek to mitigate their impacts. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/01/u...

Where might U.S. tariffs have the greatest effect in Canada? Here's an experimental estimate of exports to the U.S. per worker by census division. #cdnecon

It's a fascist government.

The underfunding of our public education system has led to a strike by support workers that is encroaching on the education of students with complex needs. Denying vulnerable students with complex learning needs access to in-person instruction is unjustifiable.

Again I remind Canadians, it is not about trade, it is about dominance

💯

For your weekend reading.

What happens when populism meets intergovernmental relations and foreign affairs? Not much good. Here are my thoughts. open.substack.com/pub/drjaredw...

Talked with @albertateachers.bsky.social and the ASCA for this one... #ableg #abpoli #abedu

The number of AI-generated essays I'm seeing, esp from younger students, has confirmed for me that our goal as educators has to be responsible, task-appropriate use. We have to help students understand how and when to use AI, when not to use it, and why not. Prohibition won't teach them anything.

Hey Lethbridgians, advance voting schedule and locations for the Lethbridge West by-election are posted. Vote early Dec 10-14 between 9am-8pm at either Melcor Centre or University Drive Alliance Church. #yql #vote

We tend to think of "brain breaks" as downtime, but a 2021 study says they're "just as important as practice in learning a new skill.” 🧠 🧵 1/11

Alberta is the least funded education system in Canada. It's a shameful fact that does not have to be the case. Right now the government is looking for your input on the budget 2025. You can send a message to government fund our classrooms by filling in the survey.

Political observers like @drjaredwesley.bsky.social have issued a warning about the growing authoritarianism of the UCP government. Now it appears a tipping point has been reached when the government doesn't just ignore the province's police chiefs, but openly mocks and disrespects them.

AI’s not a replacement for teachers, says the founder of Khan Academy and Khanmigo. Instead, it can free them up to do what they do best. 🧑‍🏫 #EduSky

NEW Study: We examined predictors of teachers’ use of #GenerativeAI. GenAI support at school was linked with greater #motivation to use genAI, and time pressure was too. Probably because genAI can act as a time-saving tool⏳ #AIinEducation doi.org/10.1016/j.ca...

The balance is to preserve liberal democracy while recognizing that “rules only matter when everyone agrees to follow them, and, well, that isn’t our present reality.” - @roxanegay.bsky.social

An excellent take on Authoritarianism in Alberta. Poilievre will do the same if elected. drjaredwesley.substack.com/p/the-ucp-is...

TORONTO(AP) Canada's ambassador to the U.S. said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was successful in getting President-elect Donald Trump and key Cabinet nominees to understand that lumping Canada in with Mexico over the flow of drugs and migrants into the U.S. is unfair. apnews.com/article/cana...

While the number in High School is certainly lower (teachers have longer periods to familiarize themselves with students writing styles), the same question applies: How are we adjusting our methods of assessment for the AI age?

NBC: Mississippi Free Press "Bluesky is getting 20 times the engagement or more than Twitter,” Pittman said. “Seeing a social media platform that doesn’t throttle links really makes it clear how badly we were being limited.” search.app?link=https%3...

.@AbDanielleSmith Real fiscal conservatives saw wisdom in minimizing bureaucratic/administrative overlap. That’s why we eliminated regional healthcare fiefdoms. In a province of 5 million people, creating 4 agencies and 7 corridors is only to reward UCP cronies with jobs. #ableg #Yeg #Yyc
