In the US called the mourning cloak. First butterfly out in spring. Before the leaves emerge.

Cool topic! I never thought of blue bottle flies as being part of a species assemblage in an ecological community.

Years ago when wandering in a large chain bookstore I noted with regret that there were plenty of books on wolves. One species. And hardly any of 'bugs'. The only place I ever found a reasonable selection was at the American Museum of Natural History bookstore in NYC.

I am amazed he walked 7 miles. I am not sure I could have done that.

Yes it is amazing how female BHCBs track host nests and lay an egg when the host is away. Any idea how many nests the hens track?
comment in response to post
I expect there were extensive grasslands in in NY during the Pleistocene along the glacial front. Habitat fragmentation has facilitated their movement east. NMS populations are suffering as a result. BHCB in the west, good, BHCB in the east, bad.

I also did degrees in OH: MS University of Cincinnati (1989), post doc Miami U (99-04) and PhD (University of Tennessee, 1994). For several years I managed a field station at Hiram College in NE Ohio and saw the damage that BHCB did to breeding neotropical migrant songbirds. They belong out west.

I am looking for this story on CNBC and I am not finding it. Can you provide a live link?
comment in response to post
I find it absurd that countries enforce smuggling laws on species that are freely killed, exterminated, and despised in country. You would think Kenya would be glad to see those ants go.
comment in response to post
Which is a real shame given how much Kenya loves its ants. www.jopestkil.com/nairobi-keny...

you might be amazed to learn just how little I give a crap about these guys.

Of course they don't define what 'anti-Christian bias' is. And they will just make the term useless, as they've done with 'Antisemitic' because it can mean about anything now.

there's no such thing as an 'American car' anymore, Steve. Parts are made all over the world and, maybe, assembled here.

Hey now just because those islands are between South Africa and Antarctica doesn't mean they won't be inhabited SOMEDAY. Maybe we should send Musk to check it out.

A bit annoying as Coates was not part of any interview about Musk. I went looking for it. The image is from an October interview about Coates' book 'The Message'.
