If you're imagining an interface where you can move a cursor by moving the switch through the air, an optical mouse sensor can't operate at a distance beyond a few millimetres off of a surface.

I believe you would need a more sophisticated sensor than what you find in a mouse if you wanted to map motion of a surface you're not physically pressing against. There's a clear send/receive division on that lens piece, so maybe some kind of proximity sensor?
